📢URGENT: An open letter to @refugees and USA demanding immediate protection for Rwandan refugees, independent investigation into the beheading of sgt. Maj. Robert Kabera, and sanctions on Rwanda for its pattern of transnational repression and impunity.
Kabera had been previously attacked in Kampala by three men who told him, “Even if you run to America, we will find you and kill you.” One week before his death, a public figure affiliated with Rwanda’s ruling party appealed to Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces requesting him to silence critics of President Kagame and to prevent them from criticizing him from Uganda; Kabera was on the list among those named.

🚨PRESS RELEASE🚨
⏺️ASSASSINATION OF SERGEANT MAJOR #KABERA #ROBERT IN #UGANDA:
➡️@IshemaParty DEMANDS AN INDEPENDENT INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATION
📍October 18, 2026
▶️The ISHEMA Party of #Rwanda has learned with profound shock and dismay of reports concerning the particularly brutal murder of Sergeant Major #KABERA Robert ,a former member of the Rwandan Patriotic Army (#RPA) who had sought refuge in Uganda and was reportedly beheaded.
▶️The ISHEMA Party condemns this barbaric act in the strongest possible terms and extends its deepest condolences to the deceased's family, relatives, friends, and all those who shared his commitment to defending fundamental freedoms.
🚨A Former Soldier Who Became an Outspoken Critic of the RPF Regime
▶️A former member of the Rwandan Patriotic Army, Sergeant Major KABERA Robert had gradually emerged as a prominent dissident voice, publicly denouncing the abuses and failures of governance under the @rpfinkotanyi
▶️In particular, he spoke out against poor governance, the concentration of power, human rights violations, and the systematic closure of political space in Rwanda.
▶️His activism extended beyond political statements. He also composed songs paying tribute to the courage of Ms. #Victoire INGABIRE UMUHOZA, a leading figure of the Rwandan opposition, whose prosecution and deprivation of liberty have raised serious concerns regarding respect for political pluralism and freedom of expression.
🚨Warnings That Reportedly Preceded His Assassination
▶️Shortly before his death, Sergeant Major KABERA Robert publicly warned of an alleged assassination plot targeting him, which he attributed to operatives acting on behalf of the authorities in Kigali.
▶️He reportedly went so far as to request special protection from the Ugandan authorities. However, according to available information, he did not receive the effective protection he had sought.
⏩️These circumstances raise fundamental questions:
🔸Were the relevant authorities aware of the threats against his life?
🔸What measures, if any, were taken to protect him?
🔸Could his assassination have been prevented?
✅Serious Suspicions Requiring an Independent Investigation
➡️The ISHEMA Party believes that the threats previously reported by the victim, his background as a former soldier turned political dissident, and the circumstances surrounding his death warrant a thorough investigation into the possibility of a politically motivated assassination.
➡️The suspicions directed at the regime of Paul KAGAME must be subjected to rigorous scrutiny, without prejudging the findings of any judicial investigation.
🔴📣The ISHEMA Party calls upon the Ugandan authorities to launch an independent, impartial, and transparent investigation, with international assistance where appropriate, to establish the precise circumstances of this crime, identify both its direct perpetrators and any individuals who may have ordered or orchestrated it, and bring all those responsible to justice.
▶️✅A Dissident Voice Does Not Deserve Death: It Deserve to be Heard
✅The right to life does not depend on adherence to any political ideology. Freedom of expression must never become a death sentence.
🚨📣The ISHEMA Party also calls upon the Ugandan authorities, international human rights organizations, and the relevant refugee protection mechanisms to strengthen the security of political exiles facing transnational thead
✅The death of Sergeant Major KABERA Robert must not go unanswered by the justice system.
✅Justice must be served.
▶️The ISHEMA Party reaffirms its solidarity with all Rwandans who peacefully exercise their right to criticize the authorities of their country, whether they live in Rwanda or in exile.

The @nytimes article's headline is misleading. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, it casts the DRC in a negative light, despite presenting no evidence that the DRC engaged in wrongdoing in connection with the $17.6 million transfer to TX-AT, a Texas-based defense firm.
The article does not even allege that the DRC participated in the disputed diversion of funds, authorized improper payments, or knowingly engaged in misconduct. Yet, by featuring the DRC in the headline without establishing any wrongdoing, the article has led readers to associate the DRC with allegations of corruption.
In the interest of journalistic integrity, @nytimes, @tylerpager, @AKurmanaev, and Managing Editors @marclacey and @carolynryan should revise the headline to accurately reflect the nature of the dispute and clarify that the article presents no evidence of wrongdoing by the DRC government.

Congolese reporters seem to have unfortunately misunderstood the facts in the @nytimes article referenced below. According to the article, $17.6 million was transferred from a DRC government account to TX-AT, a Texas-based defense and security firm that supplies defense equipment to U.S. and international law enforcement agencies. The DRC is fighting a war involving Rwanda and #M23, so a transaction with an American defense supplier is not, in itself, unusual. We need more of this.
The problem is that TX-AT is now linked to a brewing scandal in D.C. And despite attempts by President @PaulKagame's agents and allies to connect the DRC to this controversy, the payment itself does not establish wrongdoing by the DRC government. Just as you are not responsible for how your landlord spends your rent money, the DRC is not responsible for how an American company spends funds received for military equipment.
The DRC is fighting for its survival, and misinformation is President @PaulKagame's favorite weapon. Congolese journalists must avoid unintentionally spreading misinformation that could be used to discredit the DRC before the United States Congress and the world. Report the facts. It might save your country.

Formula 1’s choice of Rwanda for its first race in Africa in three decades shows its utter indifference to human rights. Rwanda is a brutal police state that has invaded the Democratic Republic of Congo to seize its minerals. trib.al/3jiMfTt

The news article below offers a glimpse into why the DRC and its duly elected government are under attack. Ever since President #Tshisekedi signed a historic minerals partnership with the United States, the attacks against him and the DRC have intensified.
Just yesterday, Belgian authorities raided the homes of President Tshisekedi’s family members in Belgium. This occurred just days after former DRC President #Kabila admitted to leading #M23 and stated his intent to illegally remove President Tshisekedi from office. The timing cannot simply be a coincidence.
The Europeans and their friend, President @PaulKagame, view the DRC as their domain. The U.S. playing a key role in the DRC is a threat to European exploitation of the Congolese people. The United States should deepen its friendship with the DRC, for our shared economic and national security interests are now intertwined.

There is one central reason President @PaulKagame and former DRC President Kabila are working against the DRC, and it is called money. To be more specific, the #DRC’s vast mineral wealth. The shocking thing is that, as we have seen before, they are prepared to kill thousands, if not millions, of innocent Congolese fathers, mothers, and children to get it.
As the death toll rises, disease and hunger spread, and millions become refugees, the crisis will become a problem for Congress and President @realDonaldTrump. The world will once again turn to the U.S. for humanitarian relief and refugee resettlement. It would save lives and cost far less for the U.S. to go after Kagame and #Kabila now than to deal with the catastrophe they will unleash.

The long-held plan to destabilize the DRC and kill President Félix Tshisekedi is now out in the open. In December 2025, we said this: “We should not fool ourselves. In Kagame’s mind, his objective remains the destabilization of the #DRC and the political destruction of President Tshisekedi.”
President @PaulKagame, former President Kabila, and M23 are one and the same. President Tshisekedi is a target because he refused to go along with a plan to continue the exploitation of the DRC’s natural resources. The U.S.–DRC Minerals Partnership made him an even bigger target; America's enemies want us out of the #DRC.
Kagame and #Kabila have spat in the face of the U.S. too many times, and we must respond with legislative and military measures to protect the Congolese people and safeguard our national security interests. The U.S. must declare open war against Kagame and Kabila and make it clear that if they proceed with this course of action, it will not end well for them.

Formula 1 is lending its global platform to Rwanda’s image-management strategy.
Sportwashing, sportwashing, and sportwashing again and again.
Yes the 10-year African Grand Prix deal is straightforward sports washing.
It arrives while UN expert reports document substantial Rwandan Defence Forces support—command, troops, training, and logistics—to the M23 in eastern Congo, linked to advances that have involved summary executions, sexual violence, forced recruitment and other abuses that may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity.
The DRC has brought a case against Rwanda at the ICJ. Rwanda denies direct involvement.
At home the record is consistent with a tightly controlled system: total electoral dominance, restricted opposition and media space, and recurring allegations of arbitrary detention and ill-treatment (Human Rights Watch, Amnesty, Freedom House “Not Free”).
This fits a wider pattern of culture washing and dance washing.
Visit Rwanda campaigns, tourism branding, and the regular international deployment of traditional Intore and other dance troupes project reconciliation, order and hospitality.
The performances are real; they also help keep cross-border military activity and domestic political constraints in the background.
F1 becomes the highest-visibility layer of the same effort.
Even if sport already races in states with severe human-rights criticism, that does not make the Rwanda partnership neutral.
It is a commercial and calendar decision that supplies prestige and soft power to a government facing documented accusations of aggression and of suppressing dissent.
The branding is already active.
The scrutiny is not.
🇷🇼Rwanda hosting Formula 1 is not the problem. The real question is whether international sporting prestige should come at the expense of human rights, accountability and the basic needs of ordinary citizens.
Yes, Rwandans deserve international sporting events, opportunities, investment and development just like anyone else. And Africa deserves to be represented on the @F1 calendar.
But at what cost, and for whose benefit?
- Rwanda is a country where serious human rights violations continue to be documented, political dissent is severely restricted, journalists and opposition figures face persecution, and critics abroad report transnational repression.
- At the same time, ordinary Rwandans are struggling with high inflation, water shortages, milk shortages, an education system facing serious challenges, and inadequate access to essential services.
- We are talking about a country where many citizens still need adequate schools, hospitals, roads, affordable food and reliable access to clean water.
Yet the government is committing to a prestigious, costly international sporting project.
How much will this cost taxpayers? What will be the return on investment? And how exactly will ordinary Rwandans benefit?
Let’s not forget about the situation in eastern DRC. We cannot celebrate Rwanda’s growing international sporting profile while ignoring documented abuses committed by Rwandan forces and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebellion, including killings, sexual violence and forced displacement, alongside the illegal trafficking of Congolese critical minerals.
Where is the accountability for the victims? Formula 1 publicly commits to respecting human rights, inclusion, ethical conduct and sustainability.
How does Formula 1 reconcile those commitments with its decision to partner with a government responsible for serious human rights violations?
This is clearly sportswashing: international sporting events are being used to promote a positive global image of @PaulKagame, while serious abuses and governance failures receive less attention.

📍#CHANZERWA KILLINGS
⏩On 7 may 1997, Rwanda Patriotic Army (#APR) units killed over 300 civilians in the villages of the #Chanzerwa locality in the Binja groupement. When they arrived in the villages, the soldiers burst into houses and killed an unknown number of civilians with hatchets.
▶️They then captured an unknown number of civilians and led them to the village of #Buhimba. Having bound and imprisoned them in the main building and courtyard at the church of the 8th #CEPAC (Community of Pentecostal Churches in Central Africa), they killed them with blows of hoes to the head. Those who tried to escape were shot dead.
▶️The bodies were then thrown into the latrines, not far from the church. The APR troops indiscriminately killed men, women and children. Most of the victims were #Congolese #Hutu civilians aka #Banyarwanda, but many #Nande were also massacred at #Buhimba.
According to several survivors, the AFDL/@rpfinkotanyi soldiers killed several children by dashing their heads against walls or tree trunks. In all, 334 victims were recorded.
