Ranking Member @RepGregoryMeeks met with the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High Level Week.  Ranking Member Meeks reaffirmed OCHA’s important role in supporting humanitarian responses globally amidst unprecedented cuts in foreign assistance by the U.S. and other donors. He thanked Under-Secretary-General Fletcher for his leadership in calling for the U.S. and other international donors to commit funding for humanitarian disaster responses in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia, which are severely underfunded with significant unmet needs. The Ranking Member underscored Congress’ direct role in authorizing and appropriating funding for OCHA’s pooled funds and called upon OCHA to continue to keep Congress informed on how that money is reaching people on the ground. The two also discussed the urgent need for U.S. leadership and reengagement with other UN humanitarian agencies to ensure that humanitarian responses are comprehensive, needs-based, and capable of stabilizing the dire situations facing the most vulnerable communities worldwide.

The Ranking Member underscored strong bipartisan support for the U.S.-Philippines alliance in Congress and the United States’ commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines in the South China Sea. The leaders discussed impacts of the war in Iran, as well as the economic and trade relationship between the United States and the Philippines. Ranking Member Meeks welcomed the progress made by President al-Sharaa's government since the repeal of the Caesar Act sanctions and Syria's removal from the State Sponsor of Terrorism list. The Ranking Member further underscored the importance of ensuring religious and ethnic minority communities are protected and fully represented in Syria. Ranking Member Meeks underscored 31 years of U.S.-Vietnam diplomatic relations and the enduring friendship between the American and Vietnamese people. The leaders reaffirmed support for the elevation of the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022 and pledged to deepen economic and security cooperation going forward.
