In September 2021, Sergeant Major Robert Kabera sat down and wrote a letter asking for protection. Rwandan media and YouTube channels were accusing him of training rebels in Uganda - which was not true, and he knew what that kind of accusation means for a Rwandan exile. He told his local council in Kampala that he was not safe.
Three days later, the LC1 chairman wrote back on his behalf. The village could not protect him, he said, because his country was still looking for him. He urgently asked @Refugees to step in.
That was five years ago. Now Robert was found dead in Kamengo, his body mutilated. So we are asking @Refugees and @UNHCRuganda directly: Did that letter ever reach you? Did anyone assess the threat against him? Was he ever considered for resettlement somewhere safer? And what happened to his case between 2021 and the morning his body was found?
He did everything a refugee is told to do. He reported the danger, he got it in writing, and he asked for help. We deserve to know what was done with it.

Rwanda's critics abroad live under constant surveillance. I know I am in constant danger. I could be killed or disappeared. Given everything that has happened, I do fear for my life. I could pretend otherwise or ignore it, but fear is the normal response to a real threat.
Anyone who criticises Kagame's regime knows its track record: transnational repression, the killing of dissidents, and the kidnapping and disappearance of critics.
Rwanda's repression doesn't stop at its borders. Finland's Yle documents what that means for those who speak out from exile.

Point of correction Sir, #Rwanda is hosting F1 not because we are a rich country, and certainly not because of the "progressive governance" you claim.
We are doing it because we have a ruthless government that prioritizes its public image over the actual lives of Rwandan citizens.
And stop acting like the @rpfinkotanyi built Rwanda from scratch. Rwanda has existed for thousands of years. Long before the #FPR ever showed up, Rwanda was entirely food self-sufficient, exported to regional markets, and had a high quality education system.
Look at it now ,#Rwandans are actively starving, and students are graduating from high school unable to even write a basic job application letter. And YES President @PaulKagame deserves all his flowers for completely failing us.
Then If you honestly think #Rwanda has "zero tolerance" for corruption, it proves you know absolutely nothing about this country. The reality is that we cannot get access to the most basic, fundamental public services without paying a bribe.
This #F1 deal is just another massive, reckless financial risk #Kagame takes time and time again because he has zero mercy for ordinary Rwandans.
These multi-million dollar sports sponsorships do nothing for the people. Their only purpose is to keep #Kagame in the global spotlight so he can hide his thieving wars in the #Congo, his bloody atrocities, the strangling of our democracy, and the torture, forced disappearances, and silencing of Rwandans.
If you cannot use your voice and your platform to speak up for ordinary Rwandans, then shut your mouth.

When we say #Formula 1 is too big for #Rwanda, we aren't talking about the size of the country,we are talking about priorities. Look at the massive fortunes you've wasted on lobbying just to bring this sport here for your sportwashing agenda.
Look at the extravagant cost of preparing for #Formula 1, and think about what that money could actually do for starving Rwandans.
Market prices are skyrocketing every single day, while wages remain completely stagnant. We don't even have a minimum wage!
Instead of dumping millions into building race tracks for Formula 1, that money should be building schools so Rwandan children can stop studying under trees.
@PaulKagame, if you think this sportwashing is going to save your failing regime, you are dead wrong.
The starvation you’ve inflicted on Rwandans and the thieving, bloody wars you run in the Congo will never let you rest in peace.
