F1 has announced a race in #Rwanda. While the continent deserves a race, a look at Rwanda's flagrant disregard for human rights, both internal and across the region, raises a question: Does @F1 have a real due diligence program? New dispatch for @hrw hrw.org/news/2026/10/16/f1s-…

Time has passed but the memories of our work in the Central African Republic have not faded. This is a reminder of why we do this work, and why we need a strong International Criminal Court despite US efforts to destroy it.

Why would Al-Shabaab republish a Western war-game? Three days ago @timkmak at the Arsenal asked: what if Somali militias had drones in 'Black Hawk Down'? A day later, Al-Shabaab's own site had it up in Arabic, drone graphics and all (though they did edit out certain passages) 1/6

There has been a pretty significant increase in JNIM and FLA’s use of kamakaze drones over the past 2 months. Accuracy also seems to have improved.
Reports indicate JNIM conducted an attack using several suicide drones against the Sevaré Air Base of the Malian army and Africa Corps, targeting air assets stationed there.

We had discussed this in our report on drone warfare in the Sahel last year. I still wonder if a condition of the support and training was that the FLA cannot transfer that knowledge to JNIM - as they have pulled off several milestones that JNIM still hasn't demonstrated.
This report by CNN is a true bombshell - a first explicit confirmation that Ukrainian operatives are in Mali, embedded within the FLA militants in the North, performing an advisor role. 15 Ukrainians are supposed to be hosted by the Tuaregs. edition.cnn.com/2026/09/12/a…

Documented impacts on local communities. One villager said, "We smell a lot of smoke; we experience nausea and headaches." Another added, "When it rains heavily and the water rises, oil spills next to it." 6/7

Serious maintenance failures increase the risk of oil leaks according to experts and industry workers. One said: "There is no regular maintenance of the pipes, and they only clean the big pipes, not the small ones. In case of high heat, the density decreases and it explodes."

Exclusive footage from inside Perenco's new "waste treatment" facility shows that the company carried out open-air burning of oil paraffins—one of the worst forms of oil waste treatment and a practice prohibited under Congolese law. 2/7
