It's critical to focus on the particular challenges faced by children under 5 and the devastating reality that a quarter of these children are food insecure. The first priority must be to address the key driver of families' poverty (lack of income) through a
#CashFirst approach.
The @EduPolicyInst has warned children under five are 25% more likely to experience food poverty than older children and it’s driving obesity and mental health crises.
It can also affect education – food poverty is associated with worse cognitive development, maths and vocabulary skills. Find out more. ⬇️

"With new data showing 2.1 million children living in a food-insecure household in 2023, it is unconscionable that the federal government has chosen to do nothing to make the child benefit a stronger safety net."
Read our new @IRPP commentary on reducing family food insecurity.
The recently announced national school food program won’t solve food insecurity for families.
Instead, as Tim Li and Valerie Tarasuk explain, action on the Canada child benefit is required to this end.

Food bank teams imagine running community hubs without the emergency food element. What’s critical is clear commitment from policy-makers to income-focused actions to address the poverty driving people to need food or baby banks in the first place #CashFirst @IFAN_UK
Baby banks are different to food banks. Yes we are meeting huge demand but we’re also about normalising reuse of baby items that have a lot more life in them (& too often go to landfill). My ambition is @LittleVillageHQ becomes a parent sharing/reuse network not a crisis response
