GRIEF MUST BE WITNESSED by Michael Whelan Sometimes I wonder if I have enough years left in my own life to learn how to carry this painful grief. Please Don't Ask Me to Be Strong. Just Sit With Me. One of the loneliest things about losing Rebecca is discovering that the world can keep spinning while mine lies in pieces on the kitchen floor. People ask how I’m doing. I understand the kindness behind the question. But how do you explain that the woman who was the grammar of your life is gone? That sometimes I turn toward an empty room to tell her something, and for one glorious, merciless second, I forget she is dead? I don't need anyone to fix this. There is no repairman for a shattered marriage of two people when one of them has died. I don't need a lecture about gratitude, strength, or how lucky I was to have loved her. I know. God, I know. That's precisely why this hurts. I need witnesses. Someone willing to hear her name without changing the subject. Someone who can sit across from me while I say the terrible things grief makes you think and not rush to clean them up. Someone who understands that I can laugh at noon and be on my knees by dusk, and neither version of me is pretending. I watched Parkinson's and dementia take pieces of Rebecca long before death took the rest. I learned how to keep her safe, how to read a face when words betrayed her, how to be brave with my hands while terror was eating me alive. And when caregiving ended, everyone saw a man who had survived. They didn't see a husband whose purpose had vanished in the same moment as his wife. Some evenings the silence isn't quiet. It has weight. It sits beside me at dinner. It follows me into bed. It wears her absence like perfume. Please don't tell me to move on. Don't mistake my ability to write about pain for proof that I've mastered it. Come sit with me. Ask me about Rebecca. Let me fall apart without trying to make it beautiful. Because grief kept hidden becomes another kind of loneliness. And love this enormous deserves something more than polite silence. It deserves to be witnessed. @mariashriver

I applaud your efforts Carrie BUT reaching those in our sport who have claims voided or regulatory vet scratches sending horses to banned trainers you will never reach- and worse yet- the elder broodmares who will never be sport horses are being discarded weekly - I can’t get through to @jockeyclub - maybe you can

There's a special circle of hell for people who keep running (and dropping) horses with poor form, known issues, and for whom offers for a safe retirement have been made *multiple* times. We only have as much credibility as an industry as the worst among us.

This is one of the finest, most powerful television ads I've every seen. Do American a favor and share this everywhere. Heart, not policy papers. Love, not hate. Hope, not fear. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
Texas was built by hope. By people who had no business believing — but believed anyway. To every Texan who’s ever wondered if anyone in power is paying attention: We are taking our state back. Because a little bit of hope is a dangerous thing.

Trump engaged in a thoughtful, extended conversation with—nothingness. He suddenly stopped, waved, saluted, offered greetings, and chatted for a bit with the empty space. 😁🤭 The cameraman deliberately zoomed out to show that there was absolutely no one to be seen for hundreds of meters in any direction. Apparently, Trump received a visit from the very same "invisible person"—the kind of encounter he had previously mocked Joe Biden for supposedly having. t.me/MirovichMedia/15645

THIS! If you aren’t listening to @HeidyKhlaaf you are the mark.
We warned about this exact scenario last year: That AI companies will situate themselves as the arbiters of life or death, taking over the arbitration of risk determinations and subverting democratic processes. All through the co-option of safety engineering terminology.

Bingo…
Ohtani homered. The Dodgers politely cheered in the dugout. A Brewer homered. The Brewers ecstatically celebrated like all 26 players were back in pony league vs their arch rivals. The Dodgers had the bigger payroll. Milwaukee had a bigger sense of "team." Hard to measure. Impossible to buy.

Granting rights to an AI is ludicrous. Among other things, accountability and responsibility have no meaning to any such entity.

East Potomac was never supposed to be a "championship course". That was the whole point. When it opened in 1921, golf in America was a rich man’s game, private clubs, high dues, closed doors. East Potomac was built to be the opposite: a muni course anyone could walk onto and play, designed by Walter Travis to challenge experts and welcome beginners on the same eighteen holes. That wasn’t an accident. It was the mission. A championship course built to chase the U.S. Open and the Ryder Cup isn’t a renovation of that mission. It’s a reversal of it. It takes a course built to open golf up to everyone and turns it into the exact kind of exclusive showcase East Potomac was created to stand against. Congress didn’t dedicate this land “for the recreation and pleasure of the people” so it could eventually become a luxury product. The irony isn’t incidental. It’s the whole fight.

Usually @austincampbell and I write collaboratively, but he has the eyes on DC, so he took point on this one. A few highlights: - Lose the hopium. It's over. - The failure was in trying to do too much at once. - Bankers don't grasp their own interests. zero-knowledge.com/blog/deat…

@BankofAmerica was fined $1.2 billion today for failing to report more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions. The @USTreasury says some of that money was linked to Chinese laundering networks, fraud, and activity at the southwest border. Separately, 475 apparent sanctions violations touching Russia, Iran, narcotics, and global terrorism. The bank admitted it willfully violated the Bank Secrecy Act. Here is the line in the story nobody will quote: not one individual was charged. I have watched this exact movie before. In 2012 I was inside @HSBC when it paid $1.9 billion for moving money for cartels and sanctioned regimes. The fine was roughly five weeks of profit. No banker went to prison. The industry took the lesson it was offered, which was that the penalty for letting dirty money through is a line item. Fourteen years and tens of billions in fines later, the Treasury Secretary says this sends "a clear message that even the biggest financial institutions are not above the law." The institution is not above the law. The people inside it are. That is the whole problem. A bank cannot go to prison. A bank cannot lose its freedom, its reputation, or its kids' respect. The only thing a fine does to a bank is reduce next quarter's number, and @BankofAmerica reports earnings tomorrow. Watch how little the stock cares. Every one of those unreported transactions passed through a person. Somebody set the thresholds. Somebody saw the alert volume and chose not to staff for it. Somebody read the 2024 cease and desist and decided the fix could wait. Until those people face something personal, the next $1.2 billion is already priced in. To the compliance officers at @BankofAmerica who flagged what they saw and were told to find a way: I know exactly where you are sitting. You are not the ones who should be nervous tonight. We do not need another record fine. We need a banker in handcuffs. cnbc.com/2026/10/13/bank-of-…

This is where the Jockey Club and industry's ongoing injustice and disconnect regarding the broodmares comes in. Every year there are countless Thoroughbreds mares ending up at lower end auctions and kills pens. We have rescued countless Thoroughbred broodmares over the years and there has never been any industry funds provided to help them. These mares gave life to the industry yet when breeders feel they are no longer useful, the mares lives do not matter anymore. This disregard for these mares lives is despicable and unacceptable. The broodmares deserve protection when their breeding careers are over and not thrust in to the auction/slaughter pipeline. There are programs that could be put in place to circumvent mares from ending up in the pipeline in the first place but the industry must invest the funds and the infrastructure to protect them. To promote increasing the foal crop when the industry has not taken care of the broodmare issue is just wrong. You cannot and should not create a second problem when you have not taken care of the first problem. There is no getting around this issue and it must be addressed. The broodmares deserve better than this and by God they have earned the right to be protected and spared a brutal death. Wake up JC and industry. @jockeyclub @BreedersCup @RealDeUavx @KYTbred @theTDN @PastTheWire @ThoroughbredRA @EponaInitiative @KateMaddenSC @RepoleStable @PatCummingsNTA @AnitaMotion

🆘🆘🆘🆘🆘🆘🆘🆘👉 This Thoroughbred mare Brilliant Missy (KY) Tattoo R13637 is at the Mclean, TX lot and has been there awhile. She has not received any help at all so far. Her time is starting to run out. This mare did everything that was asked of her. Many times some of you ask if we contact past connections. Yes, we do when we can or feel it is safe to do so. We contacted someone tonight that was affiliated with this mare that stated they had sold her 2 or 3 months ago because they could not get her in foal. They did not divulge to whom they sold her to. They said that they cannot keep every mare that does not produce until they die. And Maam, you cannot save the world. We stated not trying to save the world but this mare deserves to be safe. They offered no help and said Good Luck. This mindset and attitude amongst some thoroughbred breeders is unfortunately not unique and no surprise why broodmares end up at lower end auctions and then feedlots. Brilliant Missy is just another statistic with a Tag number. Shouldn't her life matter more than this? Doesn't she deserve safety and to be taken care of? Of course she does and that is one of the major things that we want to see, real changes being made and protection concerning broodmares in the Thoroughbred industry. This mindset that these mares are just disposable because a mare can no longer produce a foal has got to stop. So here she is at a feedlot with no help. Who is going to help her? Who is going to make sure she is safe and not taken to another auction or shipped North to Canada to be brutally slaughtered? And those of you that want to increase the foal crop, the first problem needs to be taken care of before you start a second one. @jockeyclub @BreedersCup @keenelandsales @theTDN @PastTheWire @ThoroughbredRA @EponaInitiative @KYTbred @KateMaddenSC @RepoleStable @PatCummingsNTA @AnitaMotion @TheNYRA @TurfwayPark @KPMRacingStable
