It's been a busy work for the lab. Thomas (holding 🍾) passed his @UWMadisonMDTP qualifying exam with aplomb. Very excited to see him tackle his project as a dissertator. Congrats Thomas.

Finally a gift to rival the ceremonial swords given by some unis
Excited to announce the successful thesis defense by newly minted Dr. @graceschaack (seen riding her thesis gift, a T-Rex). Great public presentation and closed-door defense. Super proud to have her as a lab alumna, and returning to the clinic to complete her MD. Congrats!

New preprint📢 We created *really* diverse libraries of barcoded #influenza viruses & used them to track viruses in hosts. We found multiple narrow within-host bottlenecks → genetically distinct "islands" of infection in a single host. Check it out⬇️ biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

What factors shape evolution of influenza virus within an individual? Happy to share our collaborative work led by @kaaamato with Luis and Kat and @tcflab, @SSCLabQuips, and @KoelleLab that shows genetic bottlenecks restrain intrahost influenza virus evolution. 1/10

New work led by @BakerVirusMaker: What happens when host cells dual purpose critical genes with cryptic antiviral function? Viruses are forced to “choose” between two bad options – suffer the antagonism or attack the essential gene and limit resources to make progeny. 👇🧵1/7

So excited it's finally in print! We worked hard to characterize patterns of #SARSCoV2 transmission in Wisconsin this past spring. Check out what we found here⬇️ @GageKMoreno @KasenRiemersma @tcflab @dho 1/

Our paper is now live at PLOS Pathogens. Several new polymerase structures came out since we submitted, and we were happy include these and discuss the potential impact of phosphorylation, especially on template exit channel formation. journals.plos.org/plospathog…
Replying to @HypemanPhD
@PUNusualSuspect makes our next step in understanding how phosphorylation directly controls the influenza virus polymerase. Spoiler alert - we find a phosphosite that specifically represses transcription while leaving replication intact. Great collaboration with Coon lab again.

Excited for our paper on influenza virus and IFIT2 now at @NatureMicrobiol : A mystery in 3 parts where things aren’t always what they seem. It has something for everyone, with CRISPR screens, CLIP-Seq, ribosome profiling, and ribosome pausing. 1/n nature.com/articles/s41564-0…
