Cason was a wonderful person full of kindness and passion for science. I'm grateful for all the time we spent doing science and laughing together. He will be missed dearly!

Hard to comprehend losing a friend and colleague so unexpectedly. Please share a thought for Cason and those closest to him. His family released an obituary and I shared a tribute from the lab. Thanks for the support NSV community. cressfuneralservice.com/obit… mehlelab.com/people/in-memor…

Society journals should be respected & supported as the bedrock of science... offer a forum to evaluate science for its rigor and merit by other scientists, with editors who work with authors without undue regard for press appeal... at an affordable price. mbio.asm.org/content/12/2/e0…

There are several reasons to think that the new UK #SARSCoV2 variant is an important one as it might be more contagious than other variants, but there are also some uncertainties. So much misinformation is being circulated, so this thread brings key data together. 🧵

Let the current vaccine misinformation and wide public mistrust be a reminder that it is a priority as scientists to disseminate our knowledge and findings to the public as much as possible. This should carry as much weight as landing your next grant or publishing a CNS paper. – at Manhattan, NY

This. Such an important role in STEM that I enjoy and am proud of.
#RandomThought My dream job in Academia would be a STEM Academic Cheerleader where I just go around to different labs and institutions encouraging people and hyping them up

I should add that in addition to being the cheerleader, I'm grateful for all those who have been mine. You'd be hard-pressed to find a scientist who hasn't benefited from a person who was in their corner during the inevitable hard times in science.

Exciting work led by exceptional person and scientist @BakerVirusMaker . Check out the thread below for more
New work led by @BakerVirusMaker: What happens when host cells dual purpose critical genes with cryptic antiviral function? Viruses are forced to “choose” between two bad options – suffer the antagonism or attack the essential gene and limit resources to make progeny. 👇🧵1/7

Our paper is now live at PLOS Pathogens. Several new polymerase structures came out since we submitted, and we were happy include these and discuss the potential impact of phosphorylation, especially on template exit channel formation. journals.plos.org/plospathog…

@PUNusualSuspect makes our next step in understanding how phosphorylation directly controls the influenza virus polymerase. Spoiler alert - we find a phosphosite that specifically represses transcription while leaving replication intact. Great collaboration with Coon lab again.

Check out our work where we describe a cellular role for IFIT2, with a little flu sprinkled in. This is the culmination of efforts by many, but special thanks to Vy for finding IFIT2, @tinagoneviral who rounded out the paper, and the rest of the lab for discussions in lab/the lib
Excited for our paper on influenza virus and IFIT2 now at @NatureMicrobiol : A mystery in 3 parts where things aren’t always what they seem. It has something for everyone, with CRISPR screens, CLIP-Seq, ribosome profiling, and ribosome pausing. 1/n nature.com/articles/s41564-0…

Science is a fundamentally human endeavor, whose purpose is to help us understand the world, better our lives, feed our innate curiosity. It is meaningless, empty, and toxic if placed above or in opposition to human rights and human lives. Humanity and justice must come first.

Our new paper is out! We find that the influenza virus polymerase has an RNA binding site required for elongation in viral transcription. Several other viral polymerases have a similar site - conserved mechanism? Take a look! jvi.asm.org/content/early/20…

As we grapple with #COVID19 while simultaneously facing deep cuts in science funding that allows us to study, diagnose and treat these viruses, it’s worth re-sharing this piece in @annualreviews of virology by me and some of my more illustrious colleagues: annualreviews.org/doi/pdf/10…
