The Verasight APSA 2026 omnibus survey report is out. Here are just a few results from the 155 questions submitted by conference participants to our verified panel: 1. 63% of respondents say democracy in the United States is becoming weaker. 2. 59% of respondents trust neither polls nor prediction markets to predict who will win an election. 3. 69% of respondents say the costs of new data centers to their state's water and energy resources outweigh the economic benefits. 4. 62% of respondents have not used any AI tool to learn about politics for the election. If a great Irish writer’s books can no longer be published in the UK because she stands with Palestine, the question isn’t what law might Sally Rooney have broken, it’s what sort of country has Britain become. irishtimes.com/culture/books…

An accompanying piece to my Odd Lots episode. It's not just about the technicalities of comparing living standards: the obsession with relative decline and 'competitiveness' is a form of declinism: "the unwitting last refuge of great power delusions." 🧵 phenomenalworld.org/analysis…

Remember when neoliberal econs told us in the post-Covid period that companies were NOT taking advantage of inflation to raise their own prices in excess of any cost increase? They also told us that industry concentration didn't explain post-Covid price hikes. Well, economists at Northeastern University tested that proposition and found good evidence for this practice--what non-econs might call "gouging" or "profiteering"--in the airline industry. Go give it a read! (link in next tweet)

New from the New York Fed: "By February 2026, tariffs had contributed 2.9 pp to goods price inflation, and without them goods prices would have fallen slightly." About one quarter of every point in higher tariff rates shows up in consumer prices within one year. • A 10% across-the-board tariff yields a 2.6% rise in consumer goods prices after one year. • About two thirds of the increase comes from pricier imports, which get passed through quickly. • Another third comes from U.S. made goods, as producers face higher input costs and less import competition. This takes longer, about 6-12 months, to filter through.

Walmart swears up and down it’s not deploying personalized pricing. Yet when we dug into hundreds of patents it’s filed over the past decade, we found that the retail giant is developing incredibly invasive technology for one purpose: padding its bottom line.
Public claims deserve a public response. Especially when they’re inaccurate and misleading. @owenslindsay1 has repeatedly suggested Walmart uses or plans to use technology to charge people more based on their personal information.

At some point in the next 18 months, the Fed is going to hike too much, the AI bubble will burst, bond yields are going to plunge and all these theories about fiscal dominance are going to look rather silly. Always choose incompetence over conspiracy

Thanks for asking! Here’s who it’s NOT backed by: Colorado Society of Addiction Medicine Colorado Academy of Family Physicians Colorado Psychiatric Society American College of Emergency Physicians (Colorado Chapter) All oppose Prop 132.
A conservative dark money group is running Prop 132 asking voters to put more Coloradans in prison for fentanyl. Is it backed by people who make money off private prisons? Don’t know. It’s dark money.
