What does it take to push back against the growing attacks on women's rights across Africa?
In the final episode of @SOAWR's special podcast series on the Maputo Protocol, recorded live during the 87th Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights in Banjul, our Regional Research and Advocacy Officer, Ramatoulie Jallow, joins Nyokabi Njogu of the Centre for Reproductive Rights for a timely conversation on the forces reshaping the women's rights landscape across the continent today.
Together, they discuss how African feminist movements are responding through collective action, strategic advocacy, and cross-regional solidarity, offering powerful insights into what it takes to defend and advance gender justice.

Senegalese lawmakers have passed a draconian bill doubling the maximum sentence for same sex conduct and criminalizing any perceived "promotion" of homosexuality.
Every person is entitled to the protection of their rights regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye should not sign this bill into law.

For more than a 1,000 days, Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating war. Throughout this period, women and girls have been subjected to widespread and systematic violence. Yet, much of what they endured have remained unheard and undocumented.
“+1,000 Days of War on Women” is a documentary series that centers these voices. It examines the impact of Sudan’s conflict on women and girls, moving beyond numbers and headlines to the realities forced into silence. This first part of the series focuses on testimonies from El Fasher, North Darfur, following the fall of the city to the RSF on October 26, 2025, capturing what women and girls endured.
The violence inflicted on women and girls in Sudan is not an unavoidable consequence of war. It has been enabled by impunity and sustained by silence, thus allowing the cycle of violence to continue.
By documenting these stories, we affirm that remembering is inseparable from accountability, and that breaking cycles of violence begins by refusing to let survivors’ voices disappear.

Girls are transforming their communities in Sierra Leone and @Purposeful_org is right there, supporting them.
223 communities across Sierra Leone have felt the seismic shifts created by more than 15,000 out-of-school adolescent girls collectively building power.
Over five years, Purposeful and their local partners have invested in young women mentors, harnessing feminist tools and practices to shift hearts and minds. By prioritising deep, long-term engagement, centering community, and strong, locally-rooted partnerships, they’ve helped build an ecosystem where girls are not passive recipients, but active changemakers.

Yet nearly half of the world’s women & girls still lack legal protection from online abuse.

SIHA Network proudly joins the global #16DaysofActivism campaign against Gender-Based Violence under this year’s powerful theme: “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls.”
Digital abuse is rapidly becoming one of the most pervasive forms of gender-based violence; from online harassment, stalking, doxxing, cyberbullying, to image-based abuse. What happens on a screen does not stay there; online violence often escalates into real-life coercion, threats, and physical harm.
Across the #HornofAfrica, where women already navigate conflict, displacement, and deep-rooted inequalities, digital spaces are emerging as new battlegrounds. Activists, journalists, human rights defenders, and young women who dare to speak are increasingly targeted.
📍 Uganda: 1 in 3 women face online harassment, and 42% report cases of sexual harassment online.
📍 Ethiopia: Women were subjected to harassment, hate speech, and revenge pornography during the conflict in Tigray.
📍 Somalia: Of more than 3,500 women and girls surveyed, 71% reported online harassment, 31% experienced it constantly, and 50% faced stalking via messaging apps.
📍 Sudan: Amid ongoing conflict, social media is being weaponized to spread hate speech and deepen polarization, intensifying risks for women.
📍 South Sudan: Digital abuse remains under-documented but mirrors the region’s broader online-to-offline violence patterns.
This year’s campaign is a reminder that #DigitalSafety is a core element of gender equality. Governments, tech companies, and communities must work together to build safe online spaces for all women and girls. VIOLENCE, ONLINE OR OFFLINE, MUST NEVER BE NORMALIZED!
SIHA Network will continue to raise our voices and demand accountability, protection, and justice.
