Rob Reiner spent decades defending democracy and fighting for equality - even when it wasn’t easy or popular. At a moment when silence is safer, his willingness to speak out is a reminder that protecting democracy requires courage. RETWEET to honor Reiner's legacy of justice ♥️

That's a consequence of Laplace's Tidal equations. Tides exist in many harmonic modes across the surface due to the variations in land shape and such, but ultimately the classical Newtonian explanation of squeezing is still correct.

The machine leveraged Newtonian gravity (describing lunar and solar gravitational forces) and Laplace’s tidal theories (modeling dynamic ocean responses) to compute tides via harmonic analysis. It summed 26 harmonic constituents periodic functions representing tidal influences like lunar semi-diurnal (M2) and solar diurnal (S1) cycles factoring in Earth’s rotation (Coriolis effects) and local coastal geography. This produced precise tide height and time predictions, critical for planning landings. The 6+ meter tidal range exposed wide beaches at low tide, risking prolonged troop exposure to German fire, and submerged Rommel’s obstacles (e.g., “hedgehogs” and mines) at mid-to-high tide, threatening landing craft. The machine’s predictions enabled landings 1–3 hours after low tide, giving demolition teams time to clear obstacles while the tide was still low, ensuring safe approaches as water levels rose. The limited tidal data from covert British missions (e.g., X-craft submarines and small boats) was sent to Arthur Doodson at the Liverpool Tidal Institute. Using Kelvin’s 1872 machine (upgraded in 1942) and a 1906 Roberts machine, Doodson’s team processed sparse measurements into hourly tide tables for “Position Z” (Normandy beaches). The machine’s ability to extrapolate from minimal inputs was key under wartime secrecy. The invasion required low tide at dawn for naval bombardment visibility, a rising tide to float landing craft, and a late-rising moon for paratrooper drops. The machine identified June 5–7, 1944, as the only dates meeting these criteria, with June 6 chosen after a weather delay. Its predictions ensured tidal conditions aligned with these operational constraints. The machine’s rapid output (a year’s tides in ~4 hours) informed the Army-Navy compromise to land after low tide, balancing obstacle clearance with sufficient water depth. At Omaha Beach, this timing was critical despite heavy resistance; at Utah, an unexpected tidal current, combined with accurate predictions, shifted landings to a less-defended area, boosting success. Without these predictions, misaligned landings could have led to catastrophic losses. As a mechanical analog computer, the machine used gears, pulleys, and cosine curves to automate harmonic summation, reducing human error in complex calculations. Its speed and reliability under tight security and data constraints were vital, making it a linchpin in D-Day planning. The machine’s integration of physics, engineering, and wartime intelligence enabled the Allies to overcome formidable tidal and defensive challenges, ensuring the success of the largest amphibious invasion in history. A good read! ⚖️♥️ tT

Dropout was rejected, LSTM was rejected, YOLO was rejected. Who cares about journals? If you don’t want to get distracted by nepotism, toxic egos or corruption, just publish on arxiv or write a blog.

Yes, for some reason fluid dynamics tend to look more convincing than those of many other elements. MKBHD also noted this here: youtu.be/OY2x0TyKzIQ?si=SSDI…

I’m still undecided whether or when to leave, but usually I now only allow comments from people I follow. Meanwhile I’m building followers on Bluesky, Mastodon and LinkedIn. There I leave comments open for all, as the discussions are more civil.

Folks, I've been screaming this forever. You know Tim Pool & Benny Johnson are the tip of the iceberg, yes? This was exposed in the EU after Crimea--Putin paid influencers in politics, biz, non-profits, &, yes, press ..anyone w public influence Ever since the Kevin McCarthy's live mic to Paul Ryan re "the Russians paying Trump & Rohrbacher" you gotta know there are 100s, maybe 1000s more. Putin stole, what, $500B, $1T(?) in Russia's assets? Paying a stooge like Benny Johnson 400K/month is pocket change. We've all seen some Left & non-MAGA Repubs suddenly fall in love w Putin. Trust me, there are many traitors among us. Prob explains some of what corporate media is doing...I hope we know the TRUTH someday

When hydrocarbon barons torch the Earth with fossil fuels, they call *us* dreamers. They insist that there's a hard-nosed reality - humanity needs energy - and they're the ones who live in it while we're in a fairyland running on sunshine and virtuous thoughts. 1/

What’s odd is the authors of the paper, in this piece, say Gulf Stream in the title. Maybe it was the editor but you could see how this could cause confusion. “Atlantic Ocean is headed for a tipping point once melting glaciers shut down the Gulf Stream.” theconversation.com/atlantic…

Girma Orssengo all but admitted his paper's model is wrong. He trained the model on data from up to 2018. doi.org/10.1029/2019EA001015 But all 5 subsequent years of out-of-sample data lie outside 3.6 times the standard deviation of his model's prediction 🤦‍♂️ pubpeer.com/publications/347…

Perhaps geophysicists need to look at more fundamental questions. Since the "wobble" of the crust was mentioned, consider that the Chandler wobble is straightforwardly understood as an impulse interaction between the annual cycle and the nodal (i.e. Draconic) lunar monthly cycle.

Z-LOD is the standardized Length of Day Index (LOD) as a simple statistical proxy for the Length of Day variability and/angular momentum. People in literature do the other way, they tend to identify thermal and precipitation analogs which are products not drivers .Respect to all.

Roundy blocks me but is ignorant of the fact that I can see what he is tweeting. I am using a fixed forcing based on calibrated LOD data. Let's see if he could do better -- he can use a free-form set of waveforms while I will restrict to a physics-based model.
