This morning, we participated in the national commemoration of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2026, where Mr. @jordan_magala01, our Complaints and Appeals Officer, joined a high-level panel discussion on "Responding to Human Trafficking in the Digital Age."
During the discussion, he highlighted the growing role of personal data in facilitating human trafficking, noting that traffickers increasingly rely on personal information obtained through fake job advertisements, phishing, social media, and other online scams to identify, recruit, and exploit victims.
He emphasized that preventing cyber-enabled trafficking requires more than technology. It calls for a culture of privacy, where organizations adopt responsible data handling practices and individuals exercise greater caution when sharing personal information online.
Jordan also noted the importance of strengthening data governance frameworks, particularly in sectors vulnerable to trafficking, to ensure personal data is collected, processed, and safeguarded in ways that reduce opportunities for exploitation.
"Privacy isn't just a fundamental right. It is an important line of defence against human trafficking in the digital age," he said, stressing the critical role that data protection plays in safeguarding individuals from emerging forms of online exploitation.
As digital threats continue to evolve, we remain committed to promoting sound data protection practices as part of Uganda's broader efforts to prevent human trafficking and protect individuals in the digital space.

*HIGH COURT CONFIRMS TERRORISM AND CHILD TRAFFICKING CHARGES AGAINST FOUR ACCUSED PERSONS*
The International Crimes Division of the High Court, presided over by Hon. Justice Bashaija K. Andrew, has confirmed terrorism and aggravated trafficking in persons charges against Twaha Kasaija, Kisambu Ismail, Muhammed Nabanji, and Mutebi Twaha alias Sheikh.
The prosecution contends that the accused, through deception and abuse of vulnerability, recruited and transported children from Kyankwanzi and Wakiso Districts to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for purposes including forced labour, sexual exploitation, and involvement in armed conflict.
In its ruling delivered yesterday, July 30, 2026, the Pre-trial Court found sufficient evidence to support all the charges, noting that most victims were minors, some as young as four years old. Evidence presented by the prosecution linked the accused to the recruitment, movement, and transfer of children to ADF camps, where they reportedly underwent military-style training. The court therefore found that there were substantial grounds to believe that the accused persons committed the alleged offences.
The matter shall now proceed before a single judge or panel of judges for trial.
Mr. Richard Birivumbuka, Chief State Attorney, and Mr. George Bigira, Senior State Attorney, represented the ODPP.
This case highlights ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and human trafficking.

Today, our Advocacy Manager, @elayzabeth, had the privilege of joining the Ministry of Internal Affairs, @mia_uga, civil society organisations, development partners, and other stakeholders to commemorate the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons under the theme: "๐๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐๐ฆ: ๐๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ง๐๐ง๐๐, ๐๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ง๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐ง ๐๐ซ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ ." โ๏ธ
The discussions highlighted the changing nature of human trafficking, with technology increasingly being used to recruit, exploit, and control victims through online scams and digital platforms. As these threats evolve, our responses must evolve too. A key takeaway from today's engagement was the urgent need for stronger coordination among government institutions, law enforcement, civil society, the private sector, and technology companies. Online scams and technology-enabled trafficking are transnational and fast-moving, making collaboration, information sharing, and survivor-centred responses more important than ever. ๐ฒ
As we strengthen governance and digital innovation, we must ensure that technology serves as a tool for protection rather than exploitation. Preventing trafficking requires sustained partnerships, responsive legal and policy frameworks, and collective action to protect those most at risk. โ๏ธ
