“Digger” is a truly masterful film that may not belong in this era. It’s a film that requires patience and provokes thought. Yes, it’s challenging but that isn’t a cinematic sin. Tom Cruise delivers arguably his best overall performance since “Born on the 4th of July.” The commitment and execution is flawless. It’s a transformative performance that helps uplift the entire supporting cast. Everyone came to play ball but no one wanted to be completely out done by Cruise. The result is a terrific ensemble cast, particularly Riz Ahmed and John Goodman, that deserves serious attention when it comes to the casting Oscar. Alejandro G. Inarritu takes big swings with most working. His pacing is deliberate which may cause concern for some viewers but I’ve never imagined Inarritu waking up and eating a Pop Tart. This is real cinema. Excellent cinema. Game changing cinema. It’s a lot of fun watching something special unfold. But I’m a cinephile. “Digger” may be conceptually too sophisticated and a tad too dark for some — which is a tragic concern. But if you are looking for something different and bold “Digger” is your ticket.

What an absolute hoot! Had tons of anvil sized fun seeing COYOTE VS. ACME at the cinema just now. It's genuinely one of the best and most timely films made by a studio I've seen all year, which makes its labyrinthine path to the screen even more ironic and inspiring. So well made, smartly written and with a gag every 3 seconds, it's a brilliant tribute to Looney Tunes legends Chuck Jones, Tex Avery and Michael Maltese. Five big sticks of dynamite from me. Don't miss!

"Propeller One-Way Night Coach" is a pleasant way to spend an hour, even if it's just to count the number of Travoltas in the movie.

The Boys of Dungeon Lane is an atmospheric nostalgia trip with hints of sex and danger. It is also Paul McCartney's best album in 20 years.

Nobody knows the art of filmmaking and comedy better than Mel Brooks. To have him select both “Ed Wood” and “Dolemite is my Name” as two of his favorite films of all time is an honor my brain can’t quite comprehend.

I can finally talk about COYOTE vs. ACME. After the long wait and the fight to get this film released, I can happily say it was worth it. Samy Burch’s screenplay is incredibly smart in its legal courtroom premise, seamlessly incorporating the iconic Looney Tunes characters while deepening our appreciation for them. The way it re-frames Wile E. Coyote as the embodiment of perseverance in the face of failure (especially when you’re up against something as intimidating as a massive corporation) is both clever and surprisingly heartfelt. The live-action/animation hybrid is well executed, capturing the same spirit that made films like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” and “Space Jam” so memorable for my generation. Everyone involved understands exactly the tone the film is aiming for, and it’s all in service of a story that’s consistently funny, charming, and emotionally satisfying. An all-around crowd-pleaser that serves as a wonderful reminder of just how great this material can be when it’s in the right hands.

Two low-budget horror movies directed by young filmmakers are outcompeting the bland generic sausage factory known as Disney. Maybe I’m a naive optimist, but the future suddenly looks bright for Indie directors with original ideas.
