TONIGHT, TUESDAY SEPT 29: MAD MAX 2 (THE ROAD WARRIOR) (1981) roars onto the screen at @regalmovies across the USA! It’s the fourth of my five picks for Regal’s Month of Masterpieces. We’re at the end of the month, and going out with a bang. I grew up with this film as 'Mad Max 2'; in the US, it was released in 1982 as The Road 'Warrior. It’s one of the great sequels. George Miller made the first Mad Max on a tiny budget, and its worldwide success gave him more room to realise his vision here. The result is one of the most influential action films ever made. It’s hard to imagine now just how startling its post-apocalyptic world looked on first release. The dust, the leather, the vehicles, the marauding gangs: countless films, music videos and adverts have borrowed from it since. Miller created a look that still feels entirely his own. But it’s the filmmaking that really floors me. This is an engine for pure cinema, stripped to the bone and driven, quite literally, by its action. There’s a spaghetti western spirit to it, and its extraordinary final act has echoes of John Ford's Stagecoach. You can also see how Miller would take these idea even further in 2015's classic Mad Max: Fury Road. But this film, made on a relatively modest budget in Australia, has ambition and invention that is astonishing. Mel Gibson is terrific as Max, a man of very few words who makes every one of them count. Whenever people debate the greatest action films of all time, Mad Max 2 has to be in the conversation. Maybe you’re seeing it for the tenth time. Maybe you’re seeing it for the first, in which case I’m envious. I hope they play it really loud. TODAY, MONDAY SEPT 28: TREMORS (1990) at @RegalMovies across the USA! This is my third of five picks for Regal’s Month of Masterpieces. When asked which films I’d love to see back the big screen again, I thought about great crowdpleasers and Ron Underwood’s monster movie gem Tremors went straight on the list. I was lucky enough to see it on its first release in 1990, and it knocked me out. Years later I discovered Simon Pegg was a fan too. It was one of the films we watched again before writing Shaun of the Dead. For me, it’s a pitch-perfect mix of action, comedy and horror. The build-up is delicious, but what really makes it work is the ensemble. You get to know these people and enjoy watching them figure out how to deal with a problem unlike any they’ve faced before. And because you care about them, every close call counts. Starring the late great Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon as our unlikely heroes, and the scene stealing Michael Gross and Reba McEntire as the lock and loaded Gummers, it’s such a fun one. If you’ve never seen it, I won’t say another word about the monster fun that’s coming. If you’ve seen it before, I think you’ll agree it’s one of the best comedy horror films ever made, and an absolute blast on a big screen. Enjoy it today. Am most saddened to hear of the death of the actor Gerrit Graham. He burns up the screen so fabulously in an all-time favourite film of mine, Phantom of the Paradise, that I can’t think of him without picturing the ill-fated, flamboyant glam rocker Beef. I also greatly enjoyed Gerrit’s performances in Brian De Palma’s Greetings and Hi, Mom! (alongside a young Robert De Niro), as well as Cannonball!, Demon Seed, TerrorVision, Chopping Mall and the supremely underrated Used Cars. But his role as Beef in Phantom of the Paradise is simply off-the-charts amazing. He’s a constant joy, from his unforgettable line readings to those insane dance moves. It’s a joyously outrageous performance in a film that raises the roof with its sheer energy. If you haven’t yet discovered this solid-gold cult classic, I urge you to pay tribute at the altar of Beef as soon as you can. Here’s to you, Gerrit, scene-stealer par excellence. We’re all sending salutations from the other side. Long live Beef!
