Sterk draadje dat uitlegt waarom de Israëlische documentaire NAZA "doordringt tot de kern van de reden waarom de aanvallen op Gaza schendingen van het oorlogsrecht vormen en tevens oorlogsmisdaden zijn".
The controversies over NAZA on here largely miss what is important about the film.
NAZA goes to the heart of why attacks on Gaza are violations of the laws of war and also constitute war crimes.

Good 🧵. Disproportionate attacks are just as illegal, and potentially just as criminal, as attacks exclusively directed at civilians.
That said, the film also reportedly describes IDF snipers shooting civilians waiting for food or entering 'elimination zones.'

Hegseth has gutted the Pentagon's framework for minimizing civilian harm. However, progress by other defence departments has not and need not come to an end. Ceasefire's Mae Thompson tells @propublica
New: As delegates gather at NATO headquarters to discuss reducing civilian harm during combat, the Trump administration's absence from a group the U.S. co-founded is being dubbed "humiliating" and “dangerous” by current and former officials. propub.li/4gIue8q

This is abject from Reform. I’m a veteran with 32 years service to my country. At no point did I think I should be above the law. The armed forces are there to defend our society, and our freedom is underpinned by the rule of law and order.

Today we mark the 12th anniv of the start of ISIL’s genocidal attack on the Yezidis. There have been sparks of accountability, w/ gratitude to orgs and lawyers taking cases forward. Many remain missing and many survivors remain in camps. Cuts in funding have deepening impact.

Join us (in-person in New York and online) for an event this Wednesday for Protection of Civilians Week.
As protection needs rise and institutional capacity contracts, civilian and community-led action to protect one another, monitor and document conflict, and respond to harm has never stopped. We're turning the lens toward these efforts and the people behind them, and exploring how the UN and Member States can support them.

Replying to @MGLattimer @YearbookofIHL
Your framing of dual-purpose attacks as the underexplored mechanism is the most useful analytical move in this piece most debate stays stuck on dual-use objects entirely. Do you think the shift toward subjective intent tests in US/Israeli practice is a deliberate doctrinal strategy, or a post-hoc litigation defense that's hardened into doctrine?

Kudos to @CeasefireCentre for their FOI campaign to get the MoD to admit to this systemic failure, as well as to @AOAV, @airwars, @iraqbodycount, @everycasualty and others doing the years of hard work on accountability that the MoD won’t do.

Pulled these from under the rubble in Beirut in Nov 2024. Sixteen months later, Israel is striking again. Almost every strike buries memories like this. Photos, homes, childhoods. Gone. Different date, same destruction, same impunity, same international cowardice and complicity.

OUT NOW: Our new report finds UK defence is ill-prepared to protect civilians from harm from UK military operations.
Civilian protection is scattered across a patchwork of ad hoc policies, doctrines, and operational practices, containing promising elements but leaving significant gaps.
Drawing on lessons from the US and the Netherlands, the report provides concrete recommendations to the UK government and MoD and urges immediate action.

We have joined this important call to ensure that the EU (and UK) does not divert all the money intended for Ukraine #reparations to the purchase of weapons.
Survivors have a right to reparation.
