My latest report to #HRC63 finds that, five years on, repression in Afghanistan is no longer a series of isolated edicts—it is a system. My new report shows how Taliban decrees and practices reach into nearly every part of life, reshaping society through fear, exclusion and ideological control. The report also focuses on the situation of children in #Afghanistan - see below.
#Afghanistan: Taliban's highly repressive policies are depriving children of their fundamental rights to inclusive & quality education, UN Special Rapporteur @SR_Afghanistan says in his new report to @UN_HRC. #HRC63

🧵 A few thoughts on the plagiarism allegations involving Prof Jason Arday, inherent racism, and why due process matters.
Today we mark the 12th anniv of the start of ISIL’s genocidal attack on the Yezidis. There have been sparks of accountability, w/ gratitude to orgs and lawyers taking cases forward. Many remain missing and many survivors remain in camps. Cuts in funding have deepening impact.

We are all deeply shocked that Rajiv is facing contempt proceedings (Palestine Action barrister’s prosecution criticised as ‘chilling’, 23 July). As clients we must have confidence that our lawyers can represent us fearlessly and independently.

UN expert Albanese says Khan's removal 'lines up neatly with fight to neutralise Netanyahu's warrant’
UN special rapporteur on Palestine Francesca Albanese says the ICC’s vote on Karim Khan 'proves that justice does threaten apartheid Israel'

Please. Khan was removed by diplomats casting a political vote in contradiction of the Judges who found no misconduct. They seized an opportunity to remove a thorn in their side. They will not select another thorn now. This case was hijacked by states. And some were ok with that
Khan was removed for his misconduct, which jeopardized the important effort to prosecute Netanyahu and other Israeli officials. The International Criminal Court needs a credible chief prosecutor, not Khan. It's important now not to give up on the ICC but to ensure that no litmus test is applied to the new chief-justice candidates. We don't want anyone who will do the equivalent of immediately stopping the investigation of Bush-era torture in Afghanistan or to slow-walk the investigation of Israeli officials until Israel's genocidal response to October 7 made that no longer possible.

Many lawyers in international justice don’t directly deal with the very dirty politics of governments. They insist on things on the merits. I strive for that myself, of course. But it is not the real world we live in with real pressures. This outcome is nothing to celebrate.

Watch and listen to Sareta Ashraph, the lead counsel for Karim Khan KC defense team on @ALHADATH @AlArabiya giving us the 1st reaction of @KarimKhanQC to the ASP vote to remove him from his position as ICC Prosecutor and what legal remedies are still open to him and his team of lawyers.
In her first exclusive interview after the ASP vote, the lead counsel speaks to me also on what she considered the lack of "due process" during the whole case against her client, and of the ICC Bureau ignoring the unanimous judicial opinion (consisting of 85 Pages) issued on 9 March 2026, by 3 eminent judges (chosen by the ICC Bureau itself) that exonerated Karim Khan from charges of misconduct against him, issued after examining 5600 pages of the UN OIOS (UN Office of Internal Oversight System) that contained hundreds of pages of documents, records & testimonies from more than 30 witnesses in addition to testimonies from "the victims" and Mr. Khan. @antonioguterres @SaretaAshraph @salagendra @IntlCrimCourt @PASPKaukoranta @USUN @USAmbUN @franceonu @UKUN_NewYork @RussiaUN @Chinamission2un @PmTunisia @JordanUN_NY @UNDjibouti @oman_un #ASP @Palestine_UN @KSAMOFA @ksamissionun @AzALWASIL @AmbAlyaAlThani @BahrainMsnNY @QatarAtUN @KuwaitMissionUN @Iraq_UN @UNEgypt @UAEMissionToUN @aalrashed @malmhuain @zaedbinkami @Matar_Alahmadi @FaisalJAbbas @MelissaFleming @DicarloRosemary @Lubaalkhalili @catkungfu @amanpour @UNarabic

The allegations were investigated for more than a year by the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services. That investigation made 137 findings, none of which made adverse findings on the allegations. There is not a single finding of misconduct, including sexual misconduct, anywhere in the OIOS report. The material gathered by the investigation was then meticulously reviewed, over a period of three months, by an independent Judicial Panel of three senior international judges appointed by the Bureau of the ICC. ⬇️

It is with regret that we note the position taken by the Assembly of States Parties. Over 180 non-governmental organisations and senior international lawyers considered the breaches of due process rights in this case to be of such significant concern that they made them known publicly.
The Assembly has nonetheless decided to disregard these concerns and follow the majority decision in the Bureau. The decision is unsupported by any lawful or properly reasoned finding that Mr Khan KC committed misconduct or breached his duties as Prosecutor. He has denied the allegations from the outset and continues to do so. ⬇️
