"Ultra-processed foods increase inflammation in the body, and it takes us away from better decision-making." @DavidPerlmutter David is a board-certified neurologist who has spent decades studying the relationship between our lifestyle choices and the health of our brains. And this idea in particular is one I keep coming back to. For me, this goes far beyond brain health in later life. It speaks to the decisions we're making right now, every single day. And as David explains, that creates a cycle that is very difficult to break. Which is precisely why understanding it matters so much. In this week's new episode of my 'Feel Better, Live More' podcast, David connects the dots between what we eat, how we think and where our brain health is heading. Tune in to episode 674: The Daily Habits That Protect Your Brain At Any Age

I was recently featured in Super Age discussing a simple intervention that can have a powerful impact on metabolic health: A 10-minute walk after a meal. A new study found that a 10-minute walk taken immediately after consuming sugar led to better glucose control than a 30-minute walk taken 30 minutes later. The finding reinforces something I've long emphasized in my clinical practice: when it comes to glucose, timing matters. After you eat, glucose begins rising in your bloodstream. If you start moving before that spike peaks, your muscles act like a metabolic sponge, pulling glucose out of circulation and into muscle tissue where it can be used for energy. The result: lower glucose excursions, less insulin demand, and improved metabolic resilience over time. This matters far beyond diabetes. Elevated glucose is associated with accelerated biological aging, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, inflammation, and excess visceral fat accumulation. One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that knowing your sugar levels only becomes important once you've been diagnosed with diabetes. In reality, glucose is one of the earliest and most important indicators of long-term health. That's why I encourage patients to monitor more than fasting glucose alone: • Fasting insulin • Hemoglobin A1c • Daily glucose patterns using a continuous glucose monitor A post-meal walk won't solve every metabolic challenge. But combined with quality sleep, strength training, stress management, and smart nutrition, it can become a remarkably effective tool for improving healthspan. Walking outdoors and improved mood. Add this to a better diet and stand back !! I have often noticed how a 20 minute walk can radically change how I feel I wonder why ??
35 minutes of walking per day is associated with optimal antidepressant effects. Not running. Not HIIT. Not CrossFit. Walking. The most underrated drug on the planet is free.

Most people optimize their diet and exercise but completely overlook one of the most powerful metabolic inputs: light. As I recently shared in the @nypost, early morning sunlight is a biological signal that sets your system for the day. Within the first hour of waking, light exposure helps: • regulate your circadian rhythm • stabilize blood sugar • reduce cravings • improve energy and sleep later that night The prescription is simple: Step outside within the first hour of waking. Do it consistently. Small, repeated signals create powerful biological shifts over time. Swipe to see exactly what’s happening in your body—and what to do about it. ➡️

One of the most overlooked tools for lowering blood sugar isn’t found in a bottle. It’s a walk. After you eat, your glucose rises. But your muscles are designed to respond — pulling glucose out of the bloodstream and using it for energy. This is how you improve insulin sensitivity in real time. The data is clear: A short walk after meals (even just 10–15 minutes) can significantly blunt glucose spikes. No prescription. No supplement. Just physiology. And here’s what most people miss: Your muscles are your largest glucose reservoir. The more muscle you build — and the more consistently you use it — the more resilient your metabolism becomes. Movement is metabolic medicine. Start with 10 minutes after your next meal.

Do you believe chronic ill health is unavoidable, or do you think we can do better? In this week's latest episode of my 'Feel Better, Live More' podcast, @lowcarbGP [Dr David Unwin] challenges the idea that poor health is just the price we pay for getting older. He reminds us that many of the conditions we now accept as “normal” didn’t used to be, and that our modern environment, especially the way we eat, has changed faster than our biology. Our bodies are far more adaptable than we’re often led to believe. And with the right understanding and simple, consistent changes, it’s possible to feel better, regain energy and reduce the risk of chronic disease at any age. Dr David Unwin has spent decades seeing people improve their health in ways they were told weren’t possible. His message is not about blame. It’s about hope. Many conditions we accept as inevitable don’t have to be. If you’ve ever been told “this just runs in your family” or “it’s part of getting older,” this episode may change how you see your health. It is a reminder that better health is often closer than we think. Tune into the full conversation in episode 611 of my 'Feel Better, Live More' podcast

Send this to someone you’re on your health journey with. Every meal, every workout, every night’s sleep—it’s all building the future you. What you do now, in your 20s, 30s, and even 50s, shapes the health you’ll experience in the decades to come. To understand why the choices you make today impact your future health, consider this: chronic disease and mobility loss are rooted in long-term, silent processes. Inflammation, poor diet, stress, and lack of exercise can slowly damage your cells, arteries, and brain, starting decades before symptoms appear. These conditions are not random—they develop over time based on lifestyle factors. Every healthy choice you make now can slow or even prevent these processes. It’s all connected. It’s never too late—or too soon—to start living well.
