"Ultra-processed foods increase inflammation in the body, and it takes us away from better decision-making." @DavidPerlmutter
David is a board-certified neurologist who has spent decades studying the relationship between our lifestyle choices and the health of our brains. And this idea in particular is one I keep coming back to.
For me, this goes far beyond brain health in later life. It speaks to the decisions we're making right now, every single day. And as David explains, that creates a cycle that is very difficult to break. Which is precisely why understanding it matters so much.
In this week's new episode of my 'Feel Better, Live More' podcast, David connects the dots between what we eat, how we think and where our brain health is heading.

I was recently featured in Super Age discussing a simple intervention that can have a powerful impact on metabolic health:
A 10-minute walk after a meal.
A new study found that a 10-minute walk taken immediately after consuming sugar led to better glucose control than a 30-minute walk taken 30 minutes later. The finding reinforces something I've long emphasized in my clinical practice: when it comes to glucose, timing matters.
After you eat, glucose begins rising in your bloodstream. If you start moving before that spike peaks, your muscles act like a metabolic sponge, pulling glucose out of circulation and into muscle tissue where it can be used for energy.
The result: lower glucose excursions, less insulin demand, and improved metabolic resilience over time. This matters far beyond diabetes.
Elevated glucose is associated with accelerated biological aging, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, inflammation, and excess visceral fat accumulation.
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that knowing your sugar levels only becomes important once you've been diagnosed with diabetes. In reality, glucose is one of the earliest and most important indicators of long-term health.
That's why I encourage patients to monitor more than fasting glucose alone:
• Fasting insulin
• Hemoglobin A1c
• Daily glucose patterns using a continuous glucose monitor
A post-meal walk won't solve every metabolic challenge. But combined with quality sleep, strength training, stress management, and smart nutrition, it can become a remarkably effective tool for improving healthspan.

UK #healthspan is falling. People are living longer, but spending more years unhealthy.
That means:
More NHS pressure
Lower productivity
More pressure on families
Higher long-term economic cost

Most people optimize their diet and exercise but completely overlook one of the most powerful metabolic inputs: light.
As I recently shared in the @nypost, early morning sunlight is a biological signal that sets your system for the day.
Within the first hour of waking, light exposure helps:
• regulate your circadian rhythm
• stabilize blood sugar
• reduce cravings
• improve energy and sleep later that night
The prescription is simple:
Step outside within the first hour of waking. Do it consistently.
Small, repeated signals create powerful biological shifts over time.
