When a company (with ai) in their URL claims they have the best, most accurate, or whiz-bang weather app, should you believe them? No, not really. There's always something better. It's risk to sell something as "the most accurate" because in the weather space, there will always be errors or busts, and sometimes colossal failures.

Its that time of year again where the hyped winter outlooks are starting to appear. Keep in the back of your mind that it is late July, not close to winter. While we have a broad *idea* of what this winter might look like with our El Nino set up, there are still a ton of deciding factors to figure out. These posts are also being more frequently posted as appose to past years with the hype around our "Super El Nino" that is expected to take place. Just keep scrolling

Tomorrow is ECMWF model upgrade day -- and holy moly it's going to be lit. 🥳 New version of IFS + EPS ensembles (full physics) --> 50r1 and AIFS-Ensemble v2 and AIF-Single v2 + ocean waves. 📈Skill scores --> huge blow out increases. Sets stage for accelerated gains.

Not much has changed based on my analysis of the latest data. POD still estimated around 60%, FAR around 70%. Trade-offs are occuring with dual-pol/radar enhancements and changes in how we warn.

Something definitely of note with these European runs and the winter weather it is showing...ever since our snowfall in DC the European has had a HEAVY cold bias in the Mid-Atlantic. Recall it was the European that had single digit low temperatures for five straight nights the week after the storm. DC never fell below 10°F the entire outbreak. I suspect it's likely due to the model overcompensating for the snow on the ground and it's feedback. With the snowpack still present, I wonder if it's too aggressive with the cold air present and the southern extent of mixing on Sunday night even if the storm precipitation is far enough north. Just something to consider from a forecast perspective.

And before it all melts... Great work by three NC State grads predicting the snow we just had. Despite the crazy setup of the storm, these three guys were right on the nose with total snowfall. Give them a follow! @wallcloud , @RaleighWx , and @webberweather

Can’t speak for them but my focus was on conveying that it wasn’t a traditional dry slot like we are usually used to and once the storm went -tilt and amplified, the ascent will follow. It was more than just back end snow, the fgen rotates and the waves come from the SW. Look at this tweet here xitter.cf/_jwall/status/20172114… Not Allan or Webb, but other messaging was on traditional “back end snow” as the low exits and they were focusing on the snow hole most of the day. I saw Raleigh folks in my mentions saying no snow, HRRR runs showing 0” etc…so I wanted to convey it wasn’t over and with a storm like this even just a couple hours of fgen enhanced/deformation bands can lay 5” quick. Rates were on our side so 0.1” liquid is 1.8” snow instead of just 1”. We were on a knives edge of getting upwards of 7-10” had this gone -tilt slightly earlier, all forecasts would have busted low. Areas like Knightdale got 5.5” wake forest 5” I mean it was that close, as you recall the were in the snow hole most of the day as well.
6z 3km NAM shows waves of FGEN-enhanced snow banding pivoting NW as the low cranks 1004mb to 977mb. Repeated mid-level ascent/deformation are 1-2”/hr rates. Ascent wins over the dry slot, from RDU to the coast and blankets I-95 in 10-15”+

Last night's 00Z ECMWF analysis showed -40°C at 500mb over northern Georgia, USA. According to ERA5 (1950-2025), this is the first time -40°C has occurred at 500mb over the Deep South states. Very reminiscent of last November's cold outbreak xitter.cf/WorldClimateSvc/status…
This eastern US cold outbreak has been an astonishing extreme. The 500mb temperature dropped to -40°C over N Carolina overnight, a full 5°C lower than the previous November record locally (Nov 8, 1976). It's almost equal to the *all-time* record from Feb 1967 (ERA5 since 1950).
