NCTQ is honored to share the 2026 @PIEnetwork Eddie Award for Best Collaboration with our partners in the coalition behind the READ Act! The READ Act would modernize the largest federal literacy grant so that federal dollars support what's working to improve reading outcomes in states: high-quality instructional materials, literacy coaching, teacher prep reform, universal screening, and parent notification. The bill advanced out of the Senate HELP committee and has been introduced in the House. Support for strong reading instruction reaches across party lines. Organized by the @NationalParents Union, this coalition brought together more than 120 organizations with different perspectives around a shared commitment to every child's literacy. We're grateful to have contributed to this work. Congratulations to our partners: @All4Ed, @BPC_Bipartisan, @amprog, @StudentSuccess, @EdTrust, @Ed4Excellence, @mass_potential, @ncldorg, @NationalParents, @teachplus, and @LearnerEquity.

Critical thinking. Math matters. Reading matters. But the ability to stop, think, ask questions, and make a solid decision follows you everywhere. That’s one reason I build simple learning tools for kids and families — I want kids practicing how to think, not just how to finish an assignment.

Teacher turnover falls hardest on the schools and classrooms that can least afford it. Districts are under pressure to make the profession more sustainable, and some are already proving it’s possible without straining budgets. That's the conversation I'm hoping to have at SXSW EDU 2027 with Lennon Audrain (@asueducation’s Next Education Workforce Initiative), Kaitlyn Chantry (@ERStrategies), and @KOJTeachPlus (@teachplus). Our panel would cover the staffing shifts districts are making now, including team-based teaching, leadership pathways, and differentiated pay, plus the trade-offs that make them possible. We'd also look at how states can scale what works. Community voting is open through Aug. 23 -- I'd be grateful for yours! participate.sxsw.com/flow/sx…

No surprises here. Worth reading alongside this study: @RANDCorporation found that math teachers who see their required materials as too challenging spend less time using them, which means students get content that's below grade level or disconnected from the curriculum they were meant to receive. nctq.org/research-insights/i…
Educators’ anxiety about teaching math could negatively affect their students’ performance, a new study finds. And students who are Black, Hispanic, or from low-income families are more likely to have teachers who are uncomfortable with the subject. edweek.org/teaching-learning…

To compete globally, Pennsylvania must have a workforce prepared for the next generation of jobs. That requires well-trained educators. Tell legislators to fully fund student teacher stipends: paneedsteachers.com/take-act…. #PANeedsTeachers #PABudget #PAHouse #PASenate

Standing with students, educators, labor leaders, advocates, and elected officials in Harrisburg was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we work together on behalf of our young people. We were there to advocate for increased state investment in Philadelphia’s public schools, supporting nearly 200,000 students through stronger school communities, healthier learning environments, and the resources they need to reach their full potential. Throughout the day, I saw people from different backgrounds and perspectives united by a shared commitment to opportunity, progress, and the success of the next generation. Thank you to @CouncilmemberKJ, @watlington_sr and @PHLschools, Reginald Streater and @PHLschoolboard, @PFTLocal3, @32bjseiu, @CenterBlackEd, @teachplus , @PubIntLawCtr, @childrenfirstpa, @502Casa, and everyone who joined us in advocating for Philadelphia’s children.

I had a great conversation with teacher Missy Carey from my district about the urgent need for stronger educator training in structured literacy. Through her work with students every day, she sees firsthand how critical early reading instruction is — and how much support teachers need to ensure every child can succeed. Organizations like Teach Plus are helping elevate educator voices and push for meaningful change in literacy instruction and teacher preparation. The data makes it clear why this matters: • 37% of 4th graders score Below Basic on NAEP reading assessments • Only 33% of Pennsylvania 4th graders are proficient readers — down from 40% in 2019 • Students who are not proficient readers by 3rd grade are far more likely to struggle academically and face increased risk of dropping out of high school • Research shows that 95% of students can learn to read with effective, evidence-based instruction Every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader, and every educator deserves the training and tools to make that possible. Investing in structured literacy training is an investment in our students’ futures. #StructuredLiteracy #ScienceOfReading #Education #LiteracyMatters #TeachPlus #PennsylvaniaSchools
