Protect our most vulnerable students. Don’t run our classrooms. That’s the message teachers across the country are sending to Washington as the school year kicks off, according to our new federal survey. Let’s dig deeper into the findings and what teachers are saying about the federal government and its role in public education: 🛡️Finding 1: The federal government has a fundamental responsibility to protect educational opportunities for all students. Nearly 90% of teachers say Washington must protect and direct resources to vulnerable students, including those with disabilities, experiencing homelessness, and from low-income families. That helps explain why teachers strongly reject the Trump administration’s ongoing push to dismantle the Department of Education and scatter critical functions–like civil rights enforcement–to other agencies that lack the same expertise. 🏫 Finding 2: Federal immigration enforcement is disrupting students' ability to learn. That’s especially true for teachers of multilingual students: 71% say ICE activity has hurt student mental health, and 65% say it’s worsened absenteeism. It’s also negatively impacting all teachers, with half saying their mental health has worsened. For too many teachers and students, the classroom has become a place of uncertainty and fear. 🤐 Finding 3: A chilling effect continues to keep teachers from addressing race and racism in their lessons. Direct pressure to limit these lessons has eased since 2024, but 17% of teachers continue to self-censor, a sign the chilling effect persists even as formal directives fade. Decisions about what and how to teach should continue to sit with states, districts, schools, and educators. 💰Finding 4: Public dollars should not be diverted to private schools. 79% of teachers told us they oppose the administration’s tax credits for donations to scholarship-granting organizations when the money is used for private schools. Instead, they want federal funds invested in the students and communities most in need. The common thread across these findings is that teachers believe the federal government has an indispensable role to play in protecting every student’s right to a fair opportunity, regardless of where they live or their background. As Congress decides education funding for the year ahead, teachers are calling on Washington to fulfill that role — not abandon it.
