Any screenplay with a relationship at the center has a big structural decision to make. Make it early, and breaking your story becomes significantly easier. It's the decision of when the characters become a team/couple. - Rom-com template is often at the end. - Buddy movies before the third act. - Love stories before the midpoint. Your genre does not dictate this. Your story does. For example, a romantic comedy does not have to operate this way. It's just a frame of reference for how these stories are traditionally told. So worry less about the genre and more about the story you want to tell. Is that third act more about how they get together, or is it about how they became a team and now they get to solve their problem as one? Once you make this choice, the rest of your structure becomes much clearer because now you know what you're working towards and when. Big decisions up front mean all the subsequent decisions get easier and easier.

I’m super thrilled to share that Snarl, my werewolf romcom, has been selected for The Dead List. In every other werewolf movie, our hero dreads the full moon. In THIS comedy, it’s date night. You can find it, and many other rad, original specs here!

My island off Seattle is quaint, quiet and quite the place to attend a writing retreat! From January to May, I host a slate of long weekends at gorgeous venues on Whidbey Island and take 6-7 writers each retreat who arrive on the island, settle in and write while staring at the ocean. The house is quiet but at meals, conversation flows and there's lots of laughter as well as sharing ideas and networking. There is a direct shuttle from the airport to just near the house, making travel so easy! Retreaters have said they didn't know they needed to get away and hunker down with their tribe until they got to Whidbey. Books are written, Screenplays are penned, Table reads too! Scrabble is next level, beach walks are times to think about your story, bounce ideas of each other. I have 2 spots still open for January and 5 for February at this charming farmhouse on a cliff overlooking the Olympic Peninsula and the ocean and sunset. Who needs this? More affordable than you might think. DM me if you'll be ready for an adventure in 2027... #amwriting #writingretreats #screenwriting
