✨🧘🍄 New study 🍄🧘✨ Many people think that meditation & psychedelics might have similar effects. Our new study examines how beliefs & cognitive processes might be similar or different in consistent meditators versus psychedelic users Share widely!

Excited that this paper, "Highly replicable multisite patterns of adolescent white matter maturation", has now been published in Neuron! It may be found at cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S08…. To freely access the paper for the next 50 days, please use this link: authors.elsevier.com/c/1nxdd…
Diffusion MRI (dMRI) is a powerful tool to study white matter maturation. In our new preprint, we process and distribute a new resource of >24,000 ABCD dMRI scans using open source tools! We then evaluate how methods shape inferences about development. 🔗 bit.ly/3QMLG0K

New paper, by me & @r_ehrenkranz (former postdoc at @TheYadenLab, now asst prof of biostats at @NorthwellHealth): We validated & shortened the Persisting Effects Questionnaire (PEQ), used to measure pos and neg changes after psychedelic exp-144 items to 14, w/ 3 stand-alone items
New paper – Validating and Creating a Short-Form of the Persisting Effects Questionnaire: A Measure of Positive and Negative Outcomes from Psychedelic Experiences The Persisting Effects Questionnaire (PEQ) is a measure of self-reported positive and negative effects from psychedelic experiences. While commonly used, the PEQ has never been formally validated, and is time-intensive and complex for both participants and researchers. Using a multi-study approach, CPCR researchers created and validated the Persisting Effects Questionnaire – Short Form (PEQ-SF), a scale that is more easily understood and reduces burden for study teams and participants. In neuroscience, global workspace theory holds that thoughts become consciously accessible when they enter a privileged workspace that’s broadcast across the brain. Using a new interpretability technique, we found something similar in Claude: the J-space. anthropic.com/research/globa…

Awesome new work by Taylor Salo and @singletonion — a small but valuable test-retest dataset comparing single & multi-echo fMRI. Completely open + fully processed!!!!
New dataset out in Data in Brief 🧠 We're releasing an open, test-retest neuroimaging dataset built for directly comparing single-echo vs. multi-echo fMRI, head-to-head, in the same people. 🔗 sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

a very clear articulation of synergy in the brain and why it's key for human-level cognition and consciousness from @loopyluppi
Brain synergy is a balance between neurons transmitting signals between each other and neurons not communicating at all; a balance of integration and segregation. What's fascinating about human brain is that evolutionary, it only grew in places that had the most synergy, and those places are not random. Meaning, you can't just enlarge a chimp's brain and get a human brain. This synergy might be key to deciphering both consciousness and cognition.

Aside from the minority opinion that meta-analysis is just inherently worthless, the only critique I've seen is that it is not fair to compare placebo controlled psychedelic data to open label traditional antidepressant data. But your analyses showed little (and no sig) diff between blinded and open label psychedelic trials. And difference between open and blinded traditional antidepressant trials was small. Formal stats aside, visually inspecting the distributions aligns with your conclusions: it's generally the same range of response. Neither one stands out with enormously more efficacy than the other. To me this is consistent with the only trial comparing SSRI to psilocybin head to head, with no sig difference on the primary depression outcome. I've seen depression patients for whom psilocybin doesn't work, so none of this surprises me. All of this is consistent with psychedelics having real efficacy, which is impressive given that you get these results with only 1 or 2 doses and you don't need ongoing blood levels of the drug to see the effect. Psychedelics still appear poised to be approvable by FDA and other regulatory bodies.

We think of white matter as highways of the brain. But when we followed development along those highways, we were surprised. The journey is more complex than we thought. My PhD paper, “Two Axes of White Matter Development”, is now out in @NatureComms!🧠 🔗bit.ly/wm2axes
