A growing body of bioethical work has examined ethical issues related to the use of psychedelics in clinical research. With @eddietalksdrugs and @ExistWell, we try to take stock in our state-of-the-field review, published in JME Practical Bioethics.

Had a great time helping represent @TheYadenLab and @JHPsychedelics yesterday at the @FDA's public hearing on psychedelics' therapeutic potential -- big things on the horizon
Representing @TheYadenLab at @JHPsychedelics & @psychedelethics at @FDA. Postdoc Eddie Jacobs @eddietalksdrugs spoke to how the evidence on psychedelic treatments comes from clinical trials, so those safeguards should be used for initial roll-out, to be adjusted based on data…

The first completely on-site preclinical animal study from @JHPsychedelics.
An immensely valuable collaboration with Division of Behavioral Biology. So grateful that I got to lead it and work with what can only be called the dream team!

New paper led by @PraachiTiwari, a former postdoc in @TheYadenLab, now faculty at Div of Behavioral Bio & @JHPsychedelics (also w/ @CassieMoorePhD, Brian Jenkins, Elise Weerts, me).

The first full year of data collected under SB 303 from Oregon's psilocybin services was recently published.
With @CaleighPropes & @ExistWell, we examine this data to give a preliminary picture as to how safety and access are being balanced in Oregon’s psilocybin services.

Trial safety data won't transfer cleanly to routine care, and we can't with confidence know which safeguards contribute to it. Record how clinics vary in practice, collect evidence of outcomes, and specify review points and evidential thresholds for loosening safeguards

Meeting with scientists, clinicians, and bioethicists at @JHUBloombergCtr to discuss practical ethical guidelines for clinical applications of psychedelics. Meeting led by @eddietalksdrugs & @Katherine_Chg with @briandavidearp and I glad to see @psychedelethics doing applied work

From 144(!) items, to just 14 plus three stand-alone items.
We validated this using factor analysis (initial factor structure did not replicate), qualitative procedures to ensure participants understand items, and getting near identical results b/w long and short form in trials

New paper, by me & @r_ehrenkranz (former postdoc at @TheYadenLab, now asst prof of biostats at @NorthwellHealth): We validated & shortened the Persisting Effects Questionnaire (PEQ), used to measure pos and neg changes after psychedelic exp-144 items to 14, w/ 3 stand-alone items
New paper – Validating and Creating a Short-Form of the Persisting Effects Questionnaire: A Measure of Positive and Negative Outcomes from Psychedelic Experiences
The Persisting Effects Questionnaire (PEQ) is a measure of self-reported positive and negative effects from psychedelic experiences. While commonly used, the PEQ has never been formally validated, and is time-intensive and complex for both participants and researchers.
Using a multi-study approach, CPCR researchers created and validated the Persisting Effects Questionnaire – Short Form (PEQ-SF), a scale that is more easily understood and reduces burden for study teams and participants.

Eddie Jacobs PhD @eddietalksdrugs representing @TheYadenLab, @JHPsychedelics, @psychedelethics–and I think the consensus of many psychedelic scientists–at @FDA
Any clinical application of psychedelics should, at least initially, use safeguards based on the clinical trial context
Representing Dr. David Yaden's (@ExistWell) lab @TheYadenLab at the CPCR & @psychedelethics at @FDA — see Postdoc Eddie Jacobs, PhD (@eddietalksdrugs) from the FDA public hearing this week on the importance of implementing safeguards based on standardized evidence on psychedelic treatments in clinical trials.

In order to adjust safeguards based on data on risks and benefits, evidence needs to be collected - and collected well, that is, in a standardized manner and comparable to other treatments and substances!

Interesting discussion prompted by @xphilosopher on our study correlating philosophical views with psychological traits in professional philosophers:
when philosophers indicate they “accept” a view (eg on PhilPapers survey), do they believe it or just defend it? Thoughts?
Many of you will know the famous finding from @ExistWell and Derek Anderson:
Philosophers' views on philosophical questions are not predicted by their personality traits
But why not? I asked Anderson about this, and he had an intriguing suggestion

Psychedelic treatments are getting leaner as they approach licensing. Our (@IanRou of @PsyPANglobal, @HattiWells, and @drrosalindwatts) new Perspective in @TheCJPsych argues this gives us (more) reason to pay attention to patients’ social/relational environments🧵
