Thanks to Nishimura's early work in the 1970s, many others followed, myself included, and began to study the muriqui. What he started led to longest-running research and conservation projects on any Neotropical primate, headed by Dr. Karen Strier.

Farewell to our good friend Dr. Akisato Nishimura, who passed away just before Christmas. Nishimura was a pioneer of primate conservation, especially in South America, and was the first modern primatologist to call attention to the muriqui, the largest South American monkey.
