It is unbelievably sad to see the JVP, a political party that opposed terror laws in the past, now in government, confidently present one of the most expansive terror laws in the form of the Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill (PSTA).
Listen to those opposing it...

Ganasara thera has evaded acceptability for his criminal acts (threats / assualt etc..) for years.. his role in the Aluthgama riots in 2014 (the speech he made) & in fermenting anti Muslims sentiments between 2011 - 2014 was never adequately investigated (1/5)

I am angry tonight.
Because today ICE shot a New Yorker. They shot a New Yorker while his five year old child was in the car.
ICE makes this city less safe.
We want them out. Now.

When monks in saffron robes are linked to sexual abuse of minors, hatred or smuggling, somehow it's not seen as disrespectful to the robe/Buddhism.
Remove a monk's robe in prison, & suddenly it is.
Perhaps the question is not about the robe, but about what we choose to defend.

Funny because earlier this year when we asked the Malwatte Chapter about whether they’d disrobe Pallegama Hemaratne, accused of child rape, they said it’s a “voluntary” matter. His expulsion from the Chapter would depend on the trial’s verdict. This was of course just months after the Chapter publicly asked monks caught smuggling drugs to voluntarily disrobe.

Expressing their displeasure on producing Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara thero before court in prison clothes, the Chief Incumbents of the three Chapters write to the Commissioner General of Prisons that it is improper & that the authority for the removal of robes remains with the Sangha Sabhawa & requesting that the accused monk be produced before court in his robes

The money was meant to purchase medical scanning equipment for a childrens hospital... There is no bottom to what this family has done.
The equipment or the money was supposed to buy was allegedly never purchased. The Rs. 10 million reportedly ended up in the Siriliya Saviya account linked to Shiranthi Rajapaksa. So now she has been arrested, along with the former chairman of the state bank... And rightfully so.
It is time to answer for what is, admittedly, a petty crime by Rajapaksa standards. Just Rs. 10 million. Barely worth getting out of bed for I imagine.
And no... the fact that they are now old does not require us to suddenly be sympathetic. These are people who ran roughshod over this country for decades with zero concern for accountability because that was the system then.
There may have been much bigger crimes. They have also had plenty of time to scrub those trails and make the evidence disappear. So go after whatever can still be proved I suppose cos corruption is corrosive at any level.

Any suggestion the Supreme Ct didn't expect Gnanasara Thero to be required to serve his prison term after his presidential pardon was held null and void but expected that a fresh pardon be given, is inconsistent with what's stated in the actual judgment in SC FR 256/2019 ⬇️

Apparently Chinese people have been making fried rice wrong for the past 1000 years.
Luckily, this white woman is teaching us how to do it right!

Former Minister A.H.M. Fowzie has been ordered to pay Rs. 6.6 million and publish a half-page apology, with a photograph of the vehicle, on the front pages of Silumina, Sunday Observer and Thinakaran.
The Supreme Court ruled that he violated fundamental rights by using a Netherlands-provided disaster management vehicle for personal purposes.
