Okay
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work.
At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated.
We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.

Personal NotebookLM with 50+ file formats and connectors for Slack, Notion, Gmail, and GitHub
github.com/MODSetter/SurfSen…
SurfSense provides an MCP server and REST API to give AI agents access to live data across the open web. It goes beyond static indexing by connecting directly to platforms like Reddit, YouTube, TikTok, and Google Maps. This lets agents pull structured info from sources where real answers live.
The project works as an open-source alternative to NotebookLM. It includes a built-in knowledge base that stores every finding with full citations. You can generate briefs or even podcasts from the research data. It's built in Python and supports self-hosting for those who want full control.
It's designed to solve the data gap for tools like Claude or OpenCode. By providing primitives for live web research, it helps agents reason over current events. Everything stays free and open source for the community to build on.

🚨 Someone built a free, open-source NotebookLM that runs entirely on your machine.
No Google account. No subscription. No data leaving your computer.
Same concept. Better privacy. Zero cost.
It's called SurfSense. 4,800 GitHub stars. And it does everything NotebookLM does — plus things NotebookLM can't.
Here's what NotebookLM actually is for anyone who missed it.
Google's NotebookLM lets you upload documents — PDFs, notes, articles, research papers — and chat with them. Ask questions. Get summaries. Have it explain complex sections. It even generates podcasts from your documents with two AI hosts discussing the content.
It went viral last year. Millions of users. Because the use case is genuinely transformative for research and learning.
The problem: your documents go to Google. Your research. Your notes. Your private materials. All processed on Google's infrastructure. Subject to Google's data policies. Connected to your Google account.
SurfSense runs locally. Your documents stay on your machine.
Here's what it can actually do:
→ Chat with any document — PDFs, research papers, articles, notes, web pages
→ YouTube integration — paste any YouTube URL, it transcribes and indexes the video
→ Web page capture — browser extension captures any page you're reading for later querying
→ Podcast generation — same two-host AI podcast feature that made NotebookLM famous. Free. Local
→ Multi-document reasoning — ask questions that span multiple documents simultaneously
→ Citation tracking — every answer traces back to the specific source document and page
→ Any LLM — OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, or any Ollama local model. Full offline capability with local models
Here's what it does that NotebookLM can't.
NotebookLM only accepts documents you explicitly upload. SurfSense captures everything — the article you're reading right now via browser extension, the YouTube video you just watched, any webpage you visit. Your entire research trail becomes searchable, not just the files you remember to upload.
And the local model support is the differentiator. With Ollama, your documents never touch any external server — not Google's, not OpenAI's, not Anthropic's. Processing happens entirely on your hardware.
Here's the wildest part.
The podcast generation is genuinely impressive. Two AI hosts with distinct personalities discuss your documents — one curious and questioning, one more analytical and explanatory. 10-minute deep dives on any paper or article you upload. The same feature that made NotebookLM go viral. Free. Unlimited. Running locally.
Here's what one install gives you.
A personal knowledge base that captures everything you read and watch. Fully searchable. Chattable. Podcast-able. With no external data sharing whatsoever.
One command to start.
Open localhost:3000. Upload your first document. Start chatting.

I’m significantly older than you. I started coding in the late 60s. My current strategy is to not read any of the code written by my agents. That’s the only way I can take advantage of their productivity. What I do instead is to surround the agents with extreme constraints. Unit tests, gherkin tests, QA procedures, quality metrics, mutation testing, test coverage, and a plethora of others. In the end, I have very high confidence in the code they produce because they’ve had to run the gauntlet of all of my constraints and tests.

Open source NotebookLM alternative with no data limits and AI agents.
Same idea as Google's NotebookLM. Same chat-with-your-docs. Same podcast generator. Same cited answers.
Except this one has no source limit, no notebook limit, no 200MB file cap, and no Google login.
It's called SurfSense.
Google NotebookLM vs SurfSense:
- Sources per notebook: 50 to 600 → Unlimited
- File size cap: 200MB and 500K words → No limit
- LLM choice: Gemini only → 100+ models via LiteLLM
- Local LLMs: Not allowed → Full Ollama and vLLM support
- Self-host: No → Yes, one Docker command
- Price: $0, $19.99/mo Pro, or $249.99/mo Ultra → $0 forever
Here's the wildest part:
It connects to 27+ sources Google can't touch.
Notion. Slack. Linear. Jira. GitHub. Discord. Dropbox. OneDrive. Gmail. Confluence. Obsidian. ClickUp. Microsoft Teams. Airtable.
Your entire work life, indexed once, searchable from one chat box.
14.4K GitHub stars. 1.4K forks. 6,232 commits. Apache-2.0 license.
One honest note: the README says it's not yet production-ready and still being actively developed. But it already does more than NotebookLM does, and the gap is widening every release.
This is what NotebookLM should have been from the start.
