Cops brazenly lie to public officials because experience has shown there are no consequences for doing so. Political support for them is not predicated on any form of accountability, or even being "good" at what they pretend their job is ("safety").
The NYPD said it couldn't testify at a City Council hearing yesterday about a controversial unit because of a court-ordered "gag order."
Thing is....there's no "gag order" related to the case.
