Today, We celebrate the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of rural women farmers who feed our communities, nurture the land, and protect Mother Nature.
Rural women are at the heart of sustainable agriculture, food security, and climate resilience, yet their contributions often go unrecognized. It’s time to champion their leadership, promote gender equality, and ensure they have access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need and deserve.
Let’s empower rural women, so we can nurture communities and protect our planet.

On Saturday, the NGO Forum preceding the 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR89) came to a close, bringing three days of dialogue, learning, advocacy, and collective action to an end.
The Forum brought together more than 350 participants from across the globe. Human rights defenders, civil society organisations, legal experts, and other stakeholders convened to reflect on pressing human rights concerns, exchange experiences, and develop collective recommendations for engagement with the African Commission.
Held under the theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” the Forum highlighted the importance of access to water and safe sanitation as fundamental human rights. It also created space for discussions on the broader challenges affecting human rights, democracy, and civic space across the continent.
Listen to Faith and @AdamuUsmanGarko , two mentees under our Roots of Resilience Mentorship Program, as they share their experiences from Day 2 of the Forum and reflect on the conversations that stood out for them.
Maria Kaddu, @CharmAfric Coordinator, also reflects on how the consortium’s engagement in the Forum supports its mission to strengthen the resilience and effectiveness of journalists, human rights defenders and their organisations, helping to foster more democratic societies.
The Forum’s final day featured presentations from special interest groups and the submission of recommendations to the Commission. The day's deliberations culminated in the adoption of nine thematic resolutions, including those addressing the protection of human rights defenders, transnational repression, enforced disappearances, and freedom of religion or belief, as well as three country specific resolutions on Somalia, Guinea Bissau, and Madagascar.
Later today at the opening of the 89th Ordinary Session of the ACHPR, these resolutions will be presented to the Commission for consideration. The Commission retains the mandate and authority to determine whether and how the resolutions will be advanced within its own processes.
As our delegation participates in ACHPR89, our advocacy continues, ensuring that the priorities and concerns raised during the Forum remain firmly on the continental human rights agenda.

DefendDefenders and AfricanDefenders are in Dakar, Senegal, participating in the NGO Forum preceding the 89th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), taking place from 8–10 October 2026.
As part of our delegation, we are joined by five mentees from our Roots of Resilience Mentorship Programme from Libya, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, bringing their perspectives, experiences, and commitment to advancing human rights across Africa.
Listen as our mentees share their reflections on Day 1 of the NGO Forum, where human rights defenders, civil society actors, and other stakeholders gathered to discuss the state of human rights and democracy across the continent.
The first panel discussion of the day provided an overview and update on the situation of human rights and democracy in Africa through sub-regional focal point reports. Our Senior Programme Officer, Walda Shaka, presented an overview of the human rights context in East and the Horn of Africa, highlighting key developments and challenges affecting the region.
The day's panels explored a range of critical human rights issues, including water justice and democratic inclusion for communities discriminated against on the basis of work and descent; an Afro-feminist perspective on shrinking civic space and protecting freedom of expression, association, and assembly; the implications of conflicts and unconstitutional changes of government for peace, security, and governance; and the promotion of economic, social, and cultural rights in the context of armed conflict.
Over the three days, the forum's discussions will be guided by this year's African Union theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” highlighting the importance of equitable access to water and sanitation in advancing human rights and inclusive development.

The United States is proud to lead a bold new chapter in U.S.-Uganda health cooperation. This Strategic Objective Agreement reflects a $1.7 billion U.S. commitment through 2030 to combat infectious disease and build lasting health security for the Ugandan people. Thank you, @henrymusasizi1, for standing with us in this effort.
UGANDA AND THE UNITED STATES SIGN STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE AGREEMENT(SOAG)
The Government of Uganda and the Government of the United States of America today signed a Strategic Objective Agreement (SOAG), setting the framework for cooperation in Uganda’s health sector for the period 2026 to 2030.
Finance Minister @henrymusasizi1 signed on behalf of Uganda while the Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy, Mikael Cleverley signed on behalf of the US Government.
This agreement puts action to the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 10th December 2025 where the United States Government committed to provide support amounting to approximately USD 1.7 billion (about Shs 6.42 trillion) for prevention, detection and response to both emerging and existing infectious disease threats.
Speaking at the signing ceremony at @mofpedU,
Finance Minister, Henry Musasizi described the agreement as “another significant milestone” in the longstanding partnership between Uganda and the United States.
He said Uganda deeply values the US contribution to the health sector over the years, particularly in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, management of disease outbreaks, public-health surveillance and strengthening health commodity supply chains.
“These interventions have saved lives, strengthened communities and enhanced Uganda’s capacity to respond to public-health emergencies,” Musasizi said.
A significant feature of the new arrangement is the intention by the US Government to channel the support directly to the Government of Uganda.
Musasizi welcomed the shift, saying it is consistent with Uganda’s objective of “strengthening country ownership, aligning external assistance with national priorities, and improving the effectiveness and sustainability of development cooperation.”
He stressed, however, that sustainable health outcomes require Uganda to strengthen its own financing of the sector.
“The Government of Uganda acknowledges that sustainable health outcomes require increased domestic financing,” he said, reaffirming Government’s commitment to progressively increase funding for the agreed interventions over the five-year period.
The partnership will go beyond disease-specific interventions to strengthen national systems and institutions, improve workforce capacity, reinforce accountability and enhance Uganda’s ability to plan, finance and deliver quality health services.
The Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy, Mikael Cleverley said the agreement represents more than a mechanism for partnership, adding that it’s a demonstration of US goodwill and confidence in the Government of Uganda leadership and the health sector.
He said the new approach seeks to empower Uganda to take greater leadership in public health through government-to-government financing.
Health Minister, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi welcomed the change from predominantly off-budget assistance towards government-to-government financing where @mofpedU will direct resources to the health sector.
He said Uganda continues to face a significant burden of both communicable & non-communicable diseases, acknowledging the need for more support.
Baryomunsi cited progress registered in the health sector such as decline in HIV prevalence from 18.5% in the late 1980s and early 1990s to 5.9% and the increase in life expectancy from about 43 years to 68 years among other indicators.

Ubuntu Law and Justice Centre welcomes the decision by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to discontinue the prosecution of two young women in the case of Uganda v. Wendy Faith alias Torrero Bae & Another (Court Case No. CO-0110-2026).
Wendy and Diana Denise were arrested on 18 February 2026 and detained at the police station until 25 February 2026, when they were released on police bond. They were re-arrested the following day, 26 February 2026, and produced before court on 27 February 2026, where they were remanded because the presiding magistrate lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.
The two were formally charged with two counts of homosexuality & indecent practices respectively on 4 March 2026 and granted bail on 8 April 2026. There after they appeared before court four times and on every appearance there was no state withnesses or evidence to support the prosecution’s case.
On 15th July 2026, the ODPP applied to discontinue proceedings. Under Art. 120 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, the DPP has powers to stop prosecution of any criminal proceedings before judgment.
We thank our lawyers, partners and allies that continue to support our interventions to advancing access to justice, protecting fundamental human rights of women and minorities as we challenge laws & practices that marginalise them.
