The way ‘consent’ has become a moral buzzword that folks drop whenever they need to strengthen an argument is so insidious and needs to be studied. It INSTANTLY adds ethical weight and pressure even if it is NOT applicable and it scares people into panicked apologetic compliance.
i've said it before but there has to be a thinkpiece somewhere on how the medical / criminal paradigm of consent has wormed its way into every discussion. wtf do you mean you don't "consent" to someone downloading your fanfic on a site that has a built in download button

Sharing a G-Drive: gray area, just use it to read, nothing more! Sharing it to another website under your name: NOT OKAY, DON'T DO THIS, this is equal to posting fanart without permission for likes, even if you credit the artist.
I'm not going to get into the discourse as to whether it's okay to post an author's work on gdocs without permission, but this? NOT okay. Do NOT repost an author's work onto another platform, at that point it just becomes theft!

AS A FIC AUTHOR I AM STAUNCHLY AGAINST USING GOOGLE DOCS TO SHARE FICS. They should be printed out on long narrow scrolls of old parchment, loaded into small tubes, and sent via carrier pigeon

one thing i really don't like about the constant fic writer discourse is the emergence of an "us vs them" mindset when it comes to fic writers and fic readers because it is so antithetical to the spirit of fandom

ESTO ES VÁLIDO, está bien que compartan el archivo pdf/epub de ao3 con los créditos correspondientes y el link directo a la obra pero NO resuban a otras plataformas trabajos que no les pertenecen
i don't care if you pass around pdfs of my fics or put them in gdrives but please do not reupload on fanfic. net or wattpad or any other alternative reading sites thank you :)

Let’s wake it up because I’m tired of mfs acting like entitled readers are the only thing poisoning fandom/fanfic spaces. When I write, it is through an intense desire to make something exist. Posting means I’m giving people the *option* to read and respond. That’s all.
ALSO people have the right to lurk. They have the right to read, enjoy something/not enjoy something and do absolutely nothing about that. You working touching them doesn't entitle you to their vulnerability in expressing that. Some of y'all are getting extremely egotistical.

Idk man, I feel downloading, sharing, public bookmarking and recommending someone's fics to other people are a form of praise just as much as a comment would be.

been writing fic for 15+ yrs and i write for me, not kudos comments shares whatever. i have fics w <100 hits and i’m having a great time 🤷🏼‍♀️ you’re writing for the wrong reasons and then taking it out on readers. it’s a hobby. it’s about expression, community, and fun. not numbers

You WILL burn out creatively if you place any significant value in external feedback and validation. I am not saying this as an entitled consumer, but as a fellow creative who had to learn the hard way that you must be your own stuff's biggest fan, unconditionally.

please. if youve ever read anything of mine and liked it enough to download and preserve it, know that you have a piece of me and I'm glad my words exist beyond my mind. share them as much as you like, stories only grow when they're passed on.
Download my fics & store them in a folder like you’re hoarding for the apocalypse. Print my fics & show your coworkers in the break room. Read my fics out loud for your YT channel. Bind my fics into a pretty book for your personal library. As long as someone’s reading I’m happy💜

If anyone finds the start of the sentence "Mass reporting fan fics to an authority outside of fandom" is familiar it's because the second half of that sentence is "IS HOW AO3 GOT BANNED IN CHINA"

yes because that's a different context!! the truth is that art in the real world is shared all the time without the artists' knowing. social media is the only place where we have this specific relatoonship with art. but ao3 is NOT social media. it is an archive!
Replying to @IlyasCigarette
we can agree to disagree on this but i think if you apply the same thought to artists posting their art and requesting not to be reposted even with credit because they will not receive any of the engagement from it, people would view this discourse differently

for a while now i think younger fic writers have seen fanfic as a 1:1 exhange between a provider and a consumer and not community sharing. a lot of problems branch off that but that's the core mindset that is killing good fic/fandom
feels like what a lot of newer ao3 posters really want to do is make their fics only available in patreon sort of deal- where you have to pay for access to them with engagement and comments and kudos- and that's what's going to finally kill off fandoms completely

the problem is you all believe your opinion is objective fact and instead of providing any sort of constructive criticism ( that is rarely asked for ) you all sound like crying babies going 'wah everything should cater to my personal reading preferences' and it's insufferable.

everyone knows fanfiction is mostly written for fun, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept writing from people who barely can form a sentence + as with every “hobby”, isn’t improving your craft kind of the point? you wouldn’t applaud someone who sucks at any other art form

I think we've gotten far too comfortable treating cruelty as some kind of personality trait. why is your response to seeing something you dislike the desire to humiliate the person who made it? why does your dislike of something need to become somebody else's punishment?
sometimes i wish it wasn't illegal to tell fic writers their shit sucks

a lot of you talk about critique when you mean review, because you don’t actually know what literary/writing critique actually entails. you talk about literacy crisis but you aren’t actually equipped or taught to give critique and confuse it for another form of text evaluation.
this mass psychosis that fanfic is an uncritiquable art form is a symptom of the literacy crisis don’t ask me how i just feel it

I have read published books that have gone throught editors and multiple reviews that suffer from this problem and those people are paid to write. You all are so hung up on fic authors because they are easy to access and attack. No one is forcing you to read fanfiction.
Replying to @Suneater_AUrec
You have never read a long form fanfic that 100s of thousands of words in does more and more bad writing/plot choices to the point of making you drop it and it shows. Absolutely insane you are trying to tell me that bad writing choices in stories have 0 to do with the authors.
