Not all warming is the same. El Niño and human-caused climate change warm the planet in different ways:
🔵Human-caused climate change warms the entire planet over the long-term
🔵Warming from El Niño is temporary, affecting specific regions

🌀#HurricaneLowell brought torrential rainfall to Hawaii — and climate change helped make its Pacific environment unusually warm.
Human-caused climate change made the unusually warm sea surface temperatures along Lowell’s path up to 60 times more likely.

Addressing the climate crisis - both cutting fossil fuel emissions and building out infrastructure to protect vulnerable people from heat and other emergencies right now - is an issue of life and death.
Thousands more Americans are dying from extreme heat than the government's official tally, according to NPR and Boston University.
The CDC count has ranged from about 700-2,500 in recent years. But NPR's model estimated the real number has been between 7,000-10,700.
Climate change and extreme heat appear to be taking many, many more lives than previously estimated.

🎙️On location at Aspen Ideas: Health: Listen to the latest episode of @COHCPodcast to learn how Lisa Patel of @docsforclimate is mobilizing fellow healthcare & public health leaders to advance climate solutions ⬇️
This past July was the warmest month on record across the contiguous United States. That’s giving Dr. Lisa Patel and her colleagues even more urgency in their climate change awareness work.
Dr. Patel is the executive director of the Medical Society Consortium on Climate & Health, which is focused on “mobilizing health voices for climate action.” But Dr. Patel and her colleagues recognize making the case requires thoughtful engagement.
“It’s not like your patients are going to come to you and say, ‘Teach me about climate change.’ What we need to do is infuse climate change into our counseling and guidance as it makes sense to do so.”
Co-hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter interview her on location at @aspenideas: Health and discuss:
💬 How climate education can be incorporated into routine pediatric visits at two, four and six months
💬 Why rising temperatures are contributing to the spread of tick-borne diseases into regions where they were once uncommon
💬 How she approaches conversations with people who are skeptical about climate change
