The tragic fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright claimed the lives of four Canadian Armed Forces members and injured 39 others. Our hearts are with the families grieving loved ones and those facing a difficult road to recovery. Jewish federations across Canada and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) have established a donation fund to support affected military families. Through the Jewish Federations of Canada – UIA’s Canadian Forces Base Wainwright Emergency Fund, we will grant all funds raised to Together We Stand Foundation, a Canadian charity dedicated to helping those who stand behind our men and women in uniform. Rabbi Chaim Mendelsohn, the first Orthodox Jewish military chaplain to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces since the Second World War, is calling on Canadians to stand with those who serve our country and their families. Four Canadian Armed Forces members lost their lives in the tragic fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, including Private Aidan Goulding, a beloved member of our Jewish community. May their memories be for a blessing. Jewish federations across Canada and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) have established a donation fund to support affected military families. Another deportation order for a former Tehran police lieutenant living in Toronto for his critical role in a crime group that helped Iran evade sanctions. The materials exported to Iran had potential military applications and could be used to manufacture weapons of mass destruction. New reporting from @stewglobal at @globalnews reveals that the Immigration and Refugee Board has ordered the deportation of Amin Yousefijam who pleaded guilty in the United States and was deported back to Canada. CIJA and thousands of Canadians have consistently called on the federal government to ensure that Canada is not a safe haven for Islamic republic officials. The federal government must accelerate removals and ensure CBSA, police, and security agencies have the funding, resources, and tools they need to identify and remove dangerous individuals who pose national security threats. Take two minutes to tell the government to take action: actionhub.ca/alert/victims-o…

Speaking on Parliament Hill, @kshahrooz of the @IJCollective said October 7 reinforced what Iranian activists have warned for decades: the Islamic Republic’s repression at home and its funding, arming and training of terrorist groups like Hamas are “two sides of the same problem.” As Kaveh warned, the international community cannot continue responding to each atrocity with statements, limited sanctions and then moving on. Canada must hold the Iranian regime accountable for its crimes at home and its support for terrorism abroad. You can watch the full presentation here: cpac.ca/headline-politics/ep…

New reporting by @IvisonJ in the @nationalpost raises serious questions about TMU's handling of the independent review conducted by Justice Mary Lou Benotto. Portions of the report were redacted that explicitly concluded Toronto Metropolitan University's codes of conduct had been breached during disruptive anti-Israel protests. Those findings were absent from the version released publicly. Justice Benotto's review was already clear: TMU had policies in place but failed to apply them consistently and decisively. Without meaningful institutional action, similar incidents are likely to recur. TMU must demonstrate that its rules are being enforced, that Jewish students and faculty receive equal protection, and that those responsible for misconduct face meaningful consequences. As the Canadian government and Defence Minister @DavidMcGuinty advance Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy, we welcome this important investment by Israel's Elbit in International Submarine Engineering Ltd., a BC-based company with 50 years of experience in subsea robotics. This marks a key milestone in Canada's strategy to help small and medium-sized businesses grow and integrate into international defence supply chains. It is also another example of how Canadians and Israelis are working together, supported by our 30-year-old Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement, to create jobs, drive innovation and strengthen the security of both our countries. More info: elbitsystems.com/news/elbit-…
Elbit Systems has completed the acquisition of International Submarine Engineering (ISE), a Canadian company specializing in advanced autonomous underwater and remotely operated systems for the maritime domain. Together, our combined capabilities strengthen a comprehensive maritime portfolio spanning autonomous surface and underwater platforms, mission systems, C2, sensors, communications, and electronic warfare. The addition of ISE is expected to expand capabilities in underwater ISR, Mine Countermeasures (MCM), and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW). Read more: tinyurl.com/2va465m4

An 11-year-old Jewish student was surrounded and subjected to antisemitic chants, including “All Jews must die,” during an anti-Israel protest on school grounds. When the school and school board failed to address the persistent bullying and harassment that continued, CIJA's Legal Task Force stepped in. This is just one example of how CIJA's network of volunteer lawyers and staff has helped more than 1,000 Jewish Canadians stand up for their rights – including when extremists target Jews for our connection to Israel. In a recent webinar, lawyers from our Legal Task Force shared the work they've undertaken to confront discrimination in schools, on campuses, in unions and beyond. CIJA and @JewishCalgary commend @CalgaryOpera for its swift and decisive response after a cast member unfurled a Palestinian flag during the October 16th performance of Tosca. Calgary Opera has set an important example for public institutions across Canada: policies must be enforced, and unauthorized protests must not be allowed to undermine the shared spaces that bring our communities together. This is about more than the safety of one targeted community. It is about upholding the standards that ensure Canada remains an inclusive and welcoming place where everyone can participate in public life with dignity, safety and respect. In the @nationalpost, @terrynewman highlights the growing pattern of Palestine Action Canada attacks on Canadian businesses and strategic industries. The United Kingdom has designated Palestine Action as a terrorist organization, while the United States has imposed terrorism-related sanctions on the group. CIJA and thousands of Canadians have called on Public Safety Minister @gary_srp to add Palestine Action Canada to Canada's list of terrorist entities. Canada must get tough on terrorism. That means urgently addressing groups responsible for attacks on Canadian soil, enforcing our laws and taking action to prevent further violence. From assassination plots targeting leaders of the Iranian diaspora and Jewish community to the imprisonment, torture and execution of those demanding freedom at home, the Islamic regime's campaign of repression threatens both the Iranian people and communities around the world. At a recent Parliament Hill press conference, former Justice Minister @IrwinCotler and Iranian pro-democracy advocate @ShilanMirzaee warned of the scale of these threats and the consequences of failing to confront them. Canada must work with international partners to hold the regime accountable, list its proxy Kata’ib Hezbollah as a terrorist entity under the criminal code (linked to recent terrorist plots targeting Jewish centers), and ensure our country is not a safe haven for IRGC operatives or Iranian officials who threaten Canadians.

CIJA stands with our German counterpart @ZentralratJuden, whose President, Josef Schuster, was the target of an Iranian-led assassination plot, and with community ally @Volker_Beck whose life was also threatened. Here in Canada, our security services have acknowledged Iranian plots targeting former Justice Minister Irwin Cotler, as well as Iranian threats to the Jewish community, the Iranian diaspora and diplomatic sites. Confronting Iran's Islamic regime demands a coordinated global response. We reiterate our call for the Government of Canada to list Iranian proxy Kata’ib Hezbollah as a terrorist entity and ensure Canada is not a safe haven for IRGC operatives or Iranian officials who threaten Canadians.

This week, our CEO @nshack and Senior Vice President @richardmarceau were proud to join their colleagues from the J7 in the UK to push for action to confront antisemitism and extremism that threaten democratic societies around the world. In London, the British Foreign Secretary committed to convene a ministerial-level meeting on antisemitism, which will include his counterparts from the U.S., Germany, France, Australia, Argentina, and Canada's foreign minister @AnitaAnandMP. We look forward to working with @GAC_Corporate to ensure this is a successful meeting that leads to concrete actions. It is clear that antisemitism is a global scourge that requires western democracies to work together to find solutions. We are proud to work alongside our J7 counterparts to push for urgent action. The threats we face cross borders, and so must our response. Read the Foreign Secretary's full statement: gov.uk/government/news/uk-ho…

Ottawa Terror Plot Conviction Reinforces Antisemitism as a National Security Threat @JoshLandau_CIJA, Senior Director of Government Relations, Ontario, Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, released the following statement: "An Ontario judge has found a youth guilty of two terrorism-related charges in connection with a 2023 plot to murder Jewish people in Ottawa. "This case reinforces what the Government of Canada has recently affirmed: antisemitism is a matter of national security – a threat to both the personal safety of Canadians and our democratic way of life. "Governments must act with urgency to confront the radicalization that fuels terrorism, ensure our security agencies have the resources they need to identify and disrupt threats, and enforce our laws to hold those responsible accountable. "Jewish Canadians should not have to wait for a mass-casualty attack before every tool available is used to confront this threat."

"Antizionism, and not just classical antisemitism, threatens liberal societies.” In a new piece for @TheHubCanada, @adam_louis52328 examines the historical roots of antizionism and how opposition to Zionism has been used to justify discrimination and racism against Jews. He makes a broader argument: when attention remains fixed on Israel and Zionism, sustained by anti-Israel libels, disinformation and propaganda, the history and consequences of antizionism itself escape scrutiny. When language is weaponized to intimidate and distort the truth, the harm extends beyond Jewish communities to the democratic values and institutions that protect us all. But, as he writes, the tide is turning as many are beginning to recognize this form of hatred, including organizations such as CIJA and the Government of Canada in a recent report by @Safety_Canada. Speaking to the BBC, CIJA CEO @nshack warned that the kinds of policies being pursued by Canada, the UK and France against Israel, are being exploited by extremists to radicalize people and inspire acts of terror. Noah points out that we now have heavily armed anti-terror policy patrolling through Canadian neighbourhoods, public transportation, tourist attractions and sporting events. "Antisemitism is a symptom of this broader problem of extremism that we all need to come together and collectively push back upon before we suffer more deadly consequences as a result."
