"In January, the world saw the regime turn its guns on its own people. Thousands were killed, and the United Nations has called it the deadliest crackdown in the history of the Islamic Republic... These are all ordinary Iranians that have been killed who just stood up and asked for democracy, asked for human rights, and asked for the rule of law." - @kshahrooz

The shooting at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, as members of the congregation gathered to worship on Yom Kippur, was a naked act of antisemitism.
Regrettably, such acts are becoming far too common in Canada. No political disagreement over the Middle East can ever justify such abhorrent behaviour.
The Iranian Justice Collective condemns this hateful act and all forms of antisemitism. We stand in solidarity with our friends in Canada’s Jewish community.

CANADA DO NOT RE OPEN THE EMBASSY OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC!
Our organization, @IJCollective, was the first to report a couple days ago that Mark Carney and his government were privately making the case for why reopening Canada’s embassy in Iran would be beneficial.
When journalists followed up on our lead, they were told the information was incorrect or merely a rumour. We stand by our work. We do not publish reports without credible evidence and reliable sources.
Now, the truth is out. (See article below). Canadians must speak up and oppose any effort to normalize and restore diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic. This is a regime responsible for the killing of children, the systematic oppression of women under gender apartheid, the sponsorship of terrorism, and the enforcement of a repressive theocratic dictatorship. It has also engaged in transnational repression, targeting dissidents, journalists, activists, and members of the Iranian diaspora far beyond its borders. The regime bears responsibility for the deaths of Canadians, including the victims of Flight PS752, and has repeatedly demonstrated contempt for international law and fundamental human rights.
At a time when Canadians continue to face concerns about foreign interference, intimidation, and transnational repression, reopening an embassy would send precisely the wrong message. We should not be creating new opportunities for a regime that has consistently sought to silence and threaten its critics abroad.
Just months ago, the regime intensified its brutal repression of the Iranian people with the slaughter of tens of thousands of innocent Iranians. Now, it appears poised to be rewarded with renewed diplomatic engagement. Mr. Carney, this is tone-deaf and cruel, not only to Canadians who have suffered because of this regime, but also to the countless Iranians who have sacrificed, suffered, and died in the struggle for freedom, justice, and human rights.
Canada must not allow the Islamic Republic to re-establish a diplomatic foothold in this country or reopen a platform from which it can advance its influence, intimidate diaspora communities, export its hateful ideology or activate its sleeper cells.
Canada, the time to act is now!

🚨Canada must not reopen the Islamic Republic's embassy!
The Iranian Justice Collective ("IJC") has received credible information that the Government of Canada intends to restore diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic and reopen its embassy, closed by Conservative Prime Minister Harper in 2012. The ending of diplomatic relations has been the correct, bipartisan policy pursued by Liberal governments since then.
This regime has murdered Canadians, continues to engage in foreign interference and transnational repression on Canadian soil, has engaged in mass murder in recent months, and has never been held accountable for its crimes.
It must not be rewarded.
The IJC will continue to engage with parliamentarians, allies, and civil society to oppose any move that normalizes relations absent meaningful change and accountability.

We at the @IJCollective broke the news two days ago that PM @MarkJCarney is moving ahead with plans to re-open Iran's embassy and to re-engage with diplomatically with the IRI.
Perhaps PM Carney could have waited until the blood of Iran's protesters was dry before doing this.

The IJC stands with the @TheRWCHR and Professor @IrwinCotler to speak out in defense of human rights defenders such as Nasrin Sotoudeh.
I strongly condemn the arrest and detention, yet again, of Iranian human rights hero #NasrinSotoudeh whose case and cause I first took up as a member of Parliament in 2011 and have represented ever since; who was convicted in a sham trial in 2018 and sentenced to a total of 38 years in prison and 148 lashes, which I characterized then as a "virtual death sentence for a woman in her late 50s"; who, in ill health, was released on medical furlough before this recent arbitrary detention - while her husband Reza Khandan remains in prison - amidst a wave of massive repression in Iran, where it has been reported that over 30,000 were massacred in two days on January 8th and 9th, followed by an unending wave of mass arrests, torture in detention and extrajudicial executions, amidst the "fog of war" of Iranian missiles raining down on the Gulf State neighbours and Israel.
@TheRWCHR and I, in joint partnership with @IJCollective, call for Nasrin Sotoudeh's immediate release and call on the Canadian Parliament, leaders of the G7 and the human rights community to join the call for her immediate release and for an end to the Iranian regime's massive domestic and transnational repression and assassination.
