On 26 August 2026, a north-facing slope on the Langtang Lirung mountain in North-Central Nepal failed. Within minutes, bedrock collapse triggered an ice-rock avalanche that swept down the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli valley and across an international border as a tsunami of floodwater.
How can this be avoided? What is needed in order to reduce the destructive scale of these disasters? Where are the next hotspots?
To address these questions and more, ICIMOD and the Government of Nepal - with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland - convened an international meeting consisting of senior disaster-management and cryosphere experts, aid agency representatives, and government officials from Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Pakistan and Nepal, from 15–17 September in Kathmandu, Nepal.
They were joined by a cohort of Swiss experts who managed a similar ice-rock avalanche in Blatten, Switzerland in 2025.

And the women most at risk of absorbing these norms? Those with less education, no assets, and more daughters than sons.
Takeaway: Empower women. Break the norm.

🚨Yesterday, at a gathering of G20 energy ministers in Houston, Texas, the United States Environmental Protection Agency announced a final rule repealing carbon emissions limits from fossil fuel-fired power plants.
From David Widawsky, US Director, World Resources Institute:
“The EPA's announcement is a major retreat from the government’s responsibility to protect Americans from dangerous air and climate pollution.
The power sector is responsible for roughly one-quarter of climate pollution in the U.S, its second largest source of emissions. Yet instead of requiring power plants to reduce those emissions, EPA is proposing to once again give fossil fuel generators a free ride, shifting the burden onto American families, communities, businesses, and taxpayers."

Glad @CMODelhi has recognised link betw air pollution & health & announced concrete measures (EVs, winter curbs) to reduce emissions. An airshed approach, with all sources of pollution addressed (waste mgt, industrial emissions, household biomass burning) for sustained effect.
Delhi is finally treating air pollution as a public health crisis. New measures target emissions from 10 million vehicles, with tighter winter controls on traffic, construction and waste. Will they deliver cleaner air?

Climate and weather hazards rarely occur in isolation. Their compounding and cascading impacts are reshaping risk landscapes and exposing gaps in how societies forecast, communicate, and prepare.
A new Call for Papers for the nature partner journal Natural Hazards special collection ‘Weather and Climate-Induced Multi-Hazard Futures: Forecast, Communication, and Preparedness for Society’ invites interdisciplinary research that advances people-centred, inclusive early warning systems, preparedness, and risk-informed decision-making.
The focus is on the social dimensions of compounding and cascading weather- and climate-related hazards in an interconnected multi-hazard world, exploring actionable science that links interacting extremes and risk management to societal outcomes, particularly for vulnerable regions and communities.
This Collection is a joint effort by npj Natural Hazards Nature Portfolio; the Societal and Economic Research Applications (SERA) Working Group of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) World Weather Research Programme (WWRP); the WWRP Progressing Early Warnings for All (EW4All) Oriented to Partnerships and Local Engagement (PEOPLE) project; the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Regional Information for Society (RIfS) core project; the UNESCO- and WMO WWRP- endorsed Seamless Prediction and Services for Promoting Environmental and Societal Sustainability (SEPRESS) programme led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).
Submission deadline: 30 September 2026.

The world today is characterized by large-scale inequalities. And a climate crisis is looming over us.
We urgently need a new vision for global progress in the 21st Century. One that grounds human development and equality in planetary habitability.
What would it take to achieve high prosperity and equality while remaining within planetary boundaries?
The World Inequality Lab is very excited to launch the #GlobalJusticeReport.
