y'all read read read & yet have no reading capabilities
op: *contribution is also supporting the writers and artists
(by interacting w/the work)*
y'all: writers and artists
op: don't get an opinion on HOW THE WORK IS SHARED
y'all: u dont want us to have a saying in ANYTHING

How you react to this tweet is a literacy test. This person explicitly says supporting fan artists and writers is participating. They’re saying those who DONT do that shouldn’t have a say in the work. That’s it!! No one can fucking read!

I’m still here.
Genuinely I think if people said “hey since ao3 is down I’m compiling a drive/list/zip/WHATEVER, message me if you want to include your fic!” Authors would’ve been ECSTATIC, eager to join!
But we live in an opt-out panopticon of scraping and intellectual theft…

And I think my issue, the one thing I can’t look past, is that the entire situation adopted a corporate internet “opt out” mentality which I think is the antithesis of fandom.
People shouldn’t have to “opt out” of being in these drives, everyone’s done this all backwards.

ao3 has only been down for a few days and this is what fandom feels like right now.
- google drive discord
- writers being harassed, mocked, disrespected
- ao3 knockoff sites that repost and monetize fanfics without writers’ consent or knowledge

Saying it louder for the people in the back; copyright law in the US and elsewhere protects authors' IP. Fanfiction is still the property of whomever wrote it, not the free property of fans.
Fan access is a privilege, not a right.

genuinely ijbol you’re not in my fandoms and you can’t respect fic writers what exactly do you think i’m losing?

Most of the people I’ve seen changing their mind on this whole Drive thing say the catalyst was talking to a writer friend.
So it makes sense that so many other people are being so obstinate. They don’t have writer friends. They’d have to participate in community for that.

“hey, we looted a bunch of people’s houses! yours might be one of them. come by our flea market if you want your stuff back. it’s amongst a sea of thousands of other stolen items. we respect you so much so make sure you jot your name down as a definite no for future theft :)”

Ao3 TOS explicitly prohibits reuploads to other sites without author permission too, and author consent is respected by ao3 as you granting them and them alone a license when you upload to their site

The funniest thing about fanfic discussions is watching several writers compete in the Pick Me Olympics in the comments.“Actually, I don't write for kudos!”“Oh yeah? I don't care if anyone reads my work!” “Attention seekers, I fistfight people who try to read my published works!”

did the download button automatically redirect you to the upload button on google drive or are you capable of comprehending them as two separate events

Authors have known how people feel about us, but we kept going because negativity was supposed to be the minority. This incident exposed how deep that negativity runs and people are valid in not wanting to share their work anymore knowing that these are the people it's going to.
