it's been a horrible couple of days for fic writers and fic readers who actually have a soul. people are stealing our work left and right, huge swaths of people in these communities are revealing themselves to be uncaring and vicious, and fandom is breaking apart.

y'all read read read & yet have no reading capabilities
op: *contribution is also supporting the writers and artists
(by interacting w/the work)*
y'all: writers and artists
op: don't get an opinion on HOW THE WORK IS SHARED
y'all: u dont want us to have a saying in ANYTHING
this narrative that the people complaining are covid-era clout-chasers from wattpad or whatever. bitch, i was twelve sneaking upstairs to the family computer at 4am to secretly read about boys kissing on livejournal, hoping that the modem dialing up wouldn't wake my parents.
i am HOWLING. who matters more? the people producing the food or the people eating the food? scientists can't decide.

THIS. it's also a test of whether or not you're allowed to interact with me.

How you react to this tweet is a literacy test. This person explicitly says supporting fan artists and writers is participating. They’re saying those who DONT do that shouldn’t have a say in the work. That’s it!! No one can fucking read!

I’m still here.
Genuinely I think if people said “hey since ao3 is down I’m compiling a drive/list/zip/WHATEVER, message me if you want to include your fic!” Authors would’ve been ECSTATIC, eager to join!
But we live in an opt-out panopticon of scraping and intellectual theft…

And I think my issue, the one thing I can’t look past, is that the entire situation adopted a corporate internet “opt out” mentality which I think is the antithesis of fandom.
People shouldn’t have to “opt out” of being in these drives, everyone’s done this all backwards.

ao3 has only been down for a few days and this is what fandom feels like right now.
- google drive discord
- writers being harassed, mocked, disrespected
- ao3 knockoff sites that repost and monetize fanfics without writers’ consent or knowledge
This is 100% true and all the people who are mad at it in the comments know that we don't want or need them in our communities, that's why they're angry. So I'll say it again: you reading my writing without interacting has no value to me. You have no value to me. Please block me.

Saying it louder for the people in the back; copyright law in the US and elsewhere protects authors' IP. Fanfiction is still the property of whomever wrote it, not the free property of fans.
Fan access is a privilege, not a right.

genuinely ijbol you’re not in my fandoms and you can’t respect fic writers what exactly do you think i’m losing?

Most of the people I’ve seen changing their mind on this whole Drive thing say the catalyst was talking to a writer friend.
So it makes sense that so many other people are being so obstinate. They don’t have writer friends. They’d have to participate in community for that.
