#REPORT: Police say that Masood Masjoody, an Iranian mathematician and former instructor at Simon Fraser University who went missing in Burnaby last month, was likely murdered by Iranian government agents.

With over 1B users interacting with AI designed to mimic human behavior, we are in the midst of a massive, unregulated social experiment. Does anthropomorphic AI design manipulate perception or facilitate misplaced trust? Our latest research challenges prevailing narratives.🧵

🧿New Preprint🧿 We argue for diversifying conceptual diversity, i.e., studying topics that are not well represented in our knowledge base. Topical diversity is related to, but distinguishable from, participant and researcher diversity. Some examples:
Psychologists often draw their 'theories' from their intuitions, schooled by their personal experiences. In this new manuscript, led by @MohammadAtari90, we argue that this reliance has led to a field built around WEIRD Questions.

Modern ML models are used by people around the world who have a variety of perspectives that often align along socio-cultural and demographic lines. Today we describe effective ways to integrate these considerations into the ML modeling pipeline. goo.gle/3QhEQNp

📣New preprint!📣We’ve long known humans tend to anthropomorphize computers. But with the rise of social AI applications, like AI companions, studying this is now more crucial than ever. We introduce a new method for *empirically evaluating* anthropomorphic behaviors in LLMs🧵
