Thought for #Libya in 2018: Libyans are ultimately to blame for foreign interference. Their lack of unity & consensus allows for foreign interference. Need grass root consensus on social / economic contract. Need agreed shared vision based on #democracy & peaceful power transfer.
The Libyan people are proud, resilient, hospitable, and deserving of peace and prosperity. The United States and Libya share a strong and enduring partnership in combating terrorism, building on our historic success in defeating ISIS in Libya together. We respect the Libyan people and the sacrifices that brave Libyans made fighting ISIS, the common enemy of both our peoples, but Libya cannot remain a corridor for illegal migration, and this must end now. The United States remains firmly committed to strengthening our bilateral relationship, supporting the long-awaited unification of Libya and Libya’s institutions, and standing with the Libyan people as they transition toward successful national elections. The Libyan people have been victims of terrorism and foreign meddling for years. I want them to unite, take back their sovereignty, and have the peaceful, prosperous future they deserve!
Lesson from Trump's u-turn: when Libyans unite other states will respect us. Otherwise they'll continue to exploit our differences as different states r currently playing us off against each other. If we don't respect ourselves-how do we expect outsiders to respect us? @follwers

I stand in solidarity with Ashraf Al-Sheh.
For those outside Libya who may not know him: Al-Sheh is a prominent Libyan political figure, a former member of the UN-facilitated Libyan Political Dialogue, and one of the signatories to the 2015 Libyan Political Agreement.
Yesterday, during an interview on Libya Alahrar TV, he said he had been informed that his name had been placed in the security system for arrest in Tripoli, which he linked to his public criticism of Abdulhamid Dbeibah’s government.
Whatever one’s political disagreements with Ashraf Al-Sheh, criticism of those in power must never become grounds for arrest, intimidation, or retaliation.
If a signatory to Libya’s UN-backed political agreement can face the threat of arrest for publicly criticising the government, the international community should ask what space remains for journalists, activists, political opponents, and ordinary Libyans to speak freely.
The attached video is from his original Arabic intervention on Libya Alahrar yesterday, which I have translated into English for international audiences following the Libyan file.
Silencing critics is not stability. It is a warning sign.

24 hours since my friend & brave journalist @ASanussi was forcibly disappeared for exposing #corruption. Where is he?
He was simply doing his job - exposing corruption. We all must demand his immediate release! #FreeAhmedSanussi #Libya
