The truth is that we’re all responsible for the dreadful things @GeorgeJulian documents so painstakingly. Until we learn how to value learning disabled and / or autistic people properly this will continue. It’s not just a few bad apples.

wouldn't it be great if @NHSEngland had a carers policy across all hospitals so that when carers are in hospital caring for loved one they are treated like staff access to food and a cuppa and a bed and a pee while they take the pressure off staff on wards #RealCarersWeek

This, friends... this is how a disability bill should be constructed: a public consultation to help determine the content and coverage for ALL people with learning disability, autism and neurodiversity.

The equipment to facilitate fully inclusive #ChangingPlaces toilets & wheelchair accessible play items in playparks is now out there.
What isn't there yet is the unwavering, unequivocal & consistent commitment to fully inclusive design standards across all of our public bodies.

I think the hardest part of being a SEND parent is that almost every aspect of family life is affected by the actions/inactions of others.
The impact of the lack of agency and autonomy is hard to describe to those who don’t live this life.

If you could re build our (dream) education system from scratch what would it look like?
Here’s just a few of mine..
Smaller schools.
Eco/thoughtfully designed buildings.
No exams.
Combined subjects for projects based learning.
No blazers/suits/Teflon/nylon clothing.

This sobering list of stressors from @WordsmithKK will resonate with many. So much stress experienced by parents and carers could be removed if systems were built on curious, compassionate and respectful foundations.
Academic research shows parents of disabled children experience 'combat-like' levels of stress. But it also assumes the source of stress is the disabled child themselves...
I DISAGREE... so I wrote a list of actual sources of stress. What would you add?

What if..... we just got rid of all local council commissioning, distributed all social care ££ via individual budgets like social security benefits, and grew 'choice and control architecture' to support people to fashion & secure their own support? #socialcarefuture

And it never ever goes away.. We need these broken, rubbish systems but they make our lives miserable. It's like the worst relationship ever.

I really struggle with DIY SOS too. I'm pleased for the families helped. But it's awful they have to cry on TV & be helped by heroes. But my main issue is that the injustice that we don't have good enough provision of adaptations via DFGs etc so a show has to do it by charity.

A perfect example that I keep referring to is DIYSOS. Each episode we see a disabled person given a gift of an accessible home by nonbdisabled people. They're the only disabled face on the show. How wonderful would it be to have a disabled designer? A disabled presenter?

I want to live in a world where, wherever you’re from and whatever your circumstances, you are believed and helped when you reach out in a crisis.

Can you imagine a summit where we co-create ideas with & for YP around mental health, neuro-diversity and Learning Disability with @NHSEngland & @educationgovuk reps present. Concrete ideas would then be developed. Who's in? How about it @ChildrensComm #StopTheSilos #SEN #MH #LD

What children need when the pandemic is over: children’s centres, playgroups, youth clubs, sports clubs, swimming, music & drama groups, days out, birthday parties, visits to museums, the theatre, cinemas, residentials, outdoor ed. What they don’t need: more maths and English.

Sleep is such an issue for not only disabled children but parent carers are telling us they are exhausted, on their knees and are exhausted. @bustogether would love to hear from you.
As a parent or carer what is your experience of sleep deprivation? How do you / have you managed? What have you learnt that helps? How has your experience left you feeling? bringingustogether.org.uk/sl… @NNPCF @contactfamilies @YvonneNewbold @SendCrisis @CerebraUK

You can do all the courses and laminating in the world, you can collect certificates for training and do special days about mental health and autism, but ultimately what do you think it means to a child? What will they remember? The print outs or the person?

Been happening for years with unpaid carers..no support in workplace = exodus of talented women.
Thread: 1. Women are leaving jobs in droves because employers refuse to put them on furlough to allow them to home school. bbc.in/2YOzP4m This exodus of qualified women is setting back the clock. But women are not the only parent, why are men not also quitting?
