Oh, Helen Whately, didn’t you push enough attacks on sick and disabled people during the week? Did you really have to start again on Saturday morning? You say more than six million people are on “out-of-work benefits”, as though that describes six million people simply choosing not to work. It doesn’t. That deliberately broad label includes people who are seriously ill, disabled people, unpaid carers, parents of very young children and people whom the DWP itself has decided should not currently be required to seek work. Many have worked and contributed for decades before illness, disability or caring responsibilities changed their lives. They do not need a lecture about “contribution” from politicians. And if the welfare system is so broken, perhaps you should ask who spent 14 years running it. The Conservatives left Britain with record NHS waiting lists, collapsing mental-health services, inadequate social care and employers still allowed to exclude disabled people, then blamed the people who became too ill to work. Of course work should pay. So raise wages, tackle insecure employment, bring down housing costs, provide social care and make workplaces genuinely accessible. Cutting the income of people who cannot work does not create a job they can do. And before you casually demand another punitive Conservative welfare regime, remember the human consequences of the last one. A parliamentary inquiry reported that since 2020–21 alone, the DWP had opened at least 240 internal reviews where its actions or omissions may have contributed to serious harm or death, and MPs warned that the true figure was probably far higher. How many people woke up this morning frightened, ashamed or wondering whether life was worth living after seeing yet another senior politician portray them as a moral failure? What is morally wrong is knowingly using misleading numbers to turn the public against sick and disabled people.We are human beings, not a bill to be cut, a problem to be solved or a Saturday-morning punchline for your political campaign.
