Thanks @RudawEnglish & Kak @dilbixwindara for discussion on Syrian refugees in Kurdistan Region of Iraq . With the significant reduction of humanitarian funding in #Iraq, we must focus on resolving #refugee displacement:
- through ending their dependence on humanitarian assistance by increasing opportunities to contribute economically within host communities in Iraq,
- through working with authorities in #Syria to mitigate & resolve security, economic and social concerns that are barriers to voluntary return, &
- through working with authorities in Iraq to help facilitate return when refugees decide they are ready to go home to Syria. @Kurdistan

أتوجه بالشكر إلى قناة @Rudawkurdish وإلى السيد @dilbixwindara على إتاحة الفرصة لمناقشة الوضع الراهن للاجئين السوريين في إقليم كوردستان العراق. ومع تراجع تمويل المساعدات الإنسانية في العراق، ينبغي علينا التركيز على إيجاد حل نهائي لقضية نزوح اللاجئين؛ وذلك من خلال:
- إنهاء اعتمادهم على المساعدات الإنسانية عبر تعزيز فرص مساهمتهم الاقتصادية داخل المجتمعات المضيفة في العراق،
- العمل مع السلطات في سوريا لتخفيف ومعالجة المخاوف الأمنية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية التي تعيق العودة الطوعية،
- التعاون مع السلطات في العراق لتسهيل عملية العودة إلى سوريا عندما يقرر اللاجئون أنهم مستعدون للعودة إلى وطنهم.

العراق: التعليم يغير حياة اللاجئين ويفتح آفاقًا جديدة لمستقبل أفضل.
احتفلت المفوضية بتخرج دفعة جديدة من الشباب اللاجئين في العراق، بعد اتمامهم دراستهم الجامعية بنجاح ضمن برنامج (DAFI) للمنح الجامعية.
منذ 2016، دعم برنامج (DAFI) 488 شاب/ة من اللاجئين في العراق لمواصلة تعليمهم.

Musa Ahmad Receives UNHCR Representative in Iraq
On 23 September 2026, Musa Ahmad, President of the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF), received Toby Harward, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Iraq @UNHCRIraq , at the Foundation’s headquarters.
During the meeting, both sides discussed the situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in Iraq and the region, their needs, and ways to strengthen and expand humanitarian cooperation.
The UNHCR Representative @UNHCRIraq expressed his appreciation to the Barzani Charity Foundation for its ongoing efforts and work in supporting and serving internally displaced persons and refugees.
For his part, Musa Ahmad thanked the UNHCR Representative and emphasized the importance of continuing and expanding international cooperation to provide the necessary support and services for internally displaced persons and refugees

أحيت الأمم المتحدة في العراق، اليوم في بغداد، الذكرى الثالثة والعشرين لتفجير فندق القناة، مستذكرةً زملاءنا الـ22 الذين فقدوا حياتهم في 19 آب 2003، ومعربةً عن تضامنها مع الناجين وعائلات الضحايا وجميع من تأثروا بهذا الهجوم.
وشارك في مراسم إحياء الذكرى موظفو الأمم المتحدة وسعادة السفير المنهل الصافي، ممثلاً عن رئيس جمهورية العراق. وتضمنت المراسم الوقوف دقيقة صمت وإلقاء كلمات ووضع أكاليل الزهور تكريماً لذكرى من فقدوا حياتهم.
وقال السيد بيتر هوكينز، المنسق المقيم للأمم المتحدة بالإنابة في العراق: «إن أصدق تكريم لمن فقدناهم هو أن نواصل التمسك بالقيم التي عاشوا من أجلها وكرّسوا حياتهم لخدمتها».
ستبقى ذكراهم خالدة، وسيظل عطاؤهم حاضراً في وجداننا.

.@tobyharward, the Head of Office and Representative for UNHCR Iraq, told Kurdistan Chronicle that over 270,000 refugees and asylum seekers live in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The large majority — around 260,000 — are Syrians.
“This has been the case since the start of the Syria conflict in 2011, when Syrian Kurds from north-eastern Syria fled across the border to a region where they share language and cultural ties,” he said.
“The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has also attracted Syrian religious minorities, including Christians, Alawites and Druze. The Kurdistan Region also hosts refugees from other countries such as Iran, Türkiye, and Palestine.”
