Kenso Soai – awarded the 2026 #NobelPrize in Chemistry – designed the first chemical reaction in which only one of the potential mirror images was formed. Other than life itself, no one had ever achieved this feat. The Soai reaction is one of the most spectacular chemical experiments ever conducted.
“This is probably the coolest experiment in organic chemistry,” said Peter Somfai, a member of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, speaking at today's announcement

Congrats to prof. Soai, this years Nobel Prize laureate and also speaker of IOCB Invited Talks series. We are very proud to have now 17 Nobel Prize winners among them. We are even more proud that some of them got their Nobel Prize AFTER being invited to IOCB…
🗣️ What was it like to work with a future Nobel laureate? Ivo Starý from our institute spoke about his experience in a Czech Television special – earlier in his career, he worked with Kensō Soai, one of the two chemists awarded today.

“Our prime minister wants to call me…”
2026 chemistry laureate Kenso Soai needed to cut short our interview when he learnt that the Japanese prime minister was trying to reach him. Before then, the new laureate spoke to us about his excitement on being awarded the #NobelPrize.
Soai also explained how it feels to have researchers all over the world studying his famous Soai reaction – one of the most spectacular chemical experiments ever conducted.

Our Nature paper on the formation of Earth is out today. A thread.
The paper is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration between cosmochemists who study meteorites in the laboratory and astrophysicists who study planet formation.

Revisiting A Long-Time Question: How stellar radiation breaks symmetry in meteoritic isovaline? By studying the response of iva to chiral light, we aimed to simulate the photolysis processes that may occur in space. @ERC_Research @NatureComms

ALT Experimental preparation of analogues mimicking isovaline adsorbed on interstellar dust grains in the laboratory (photo: postdoctoral student Jana Bocková). Thin films of isovaline are needed to first study the interaction between isovaline with circularly polarized photons. This allows to examine the chiroptical properties of isovaline, which refer to its response to circularly polarized light. Furthermore, the researchers aimed to understand the asymmetric photolysis that isovaline would undergo in interstellar environments. By subjecting the thin films to controlled conditions and studying their response to specific wavelengths of circularly polarized light, they sought to simulate the photolysis processes that may occur in space.
