In a continuation of the alarming attacks on human rights defenders, Boniface Mulinge Muteti and Collins Otieno were reportedly abducted and tortured in September 2026.
I call for an immediate and independent investigation, accountability for those responsible, and an end to all acts of intimidation, violence, and reprisals against human rights defenders.

Looks like a case of theft or at the minimum abuse of public resources has taken significant shape on the issue of the Gwanda solar project. Duty bearers seem to now have clear possibilities to follow to ensure accountability for public funds.
G6 lifts the lid on the Gwanda solar deal!
At the funeral of his late brother, businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s brother, Joachim “G6” Chivayo, revealed how he allegedly sold his cars and raised US$220,000 after being told the controversial Gwanda solar project had been secured.
G6 claimed Wicknell later told him the deal had paid out US$5 million, and he expected to receive US$1 million as his share.
But things allegedly took a different turn. G6 said Wicknell stopped answering his calls while splashing money on luxury cars and international trips.
When he finally confronted him, G6 claimed Wicknell said the money was finished and offered him a US$400,000 car instead.
G6 said the experience showed that his late brother’s “hustling mentality” extended even to family.
What really happened to the Gwanda solar money?

Burial of Mwalimu Jackson Karua in #Kenya: Leadership lessons
I return from Kenya deeply moved by the funeral service of #MwalimuJacksonKarua in Kirinyaga. He was a teacher at a number of schools in the Mt Kenya area.
The eulogies across generations revealed a man who lived a full, honest life, teaching through both his words and his example. His community remembered integrity, shared values, accountable governance and respect for human dignity. His life reminds us that leadership earns lasting trust when conviction and conduct walk together.
Among the mourners were former President #UhuruKenyatta and several leaders aspiring to Kenya’s presidency in 2027, including Mwalimu’s daughter, Martha Karua @MarthaKarua
I left with a distinct feeling that we might have shared that gathering with a future president. Whoever ultimately leads Kenya, the life we celebrated offers a demanding standard, honesty, humility, service and accountability to the people.
I was equally struck by how freely speakers discussed their country’s challenges and future, without any apparent fear for their safety. That freedom to speak, question and hold leaders accountable is precious. Across Africa, leadership with integrity must protect it.
Go well, Mwalimu Jackson Karua. Your 98 years leave a legacy that reaches beyond your family and Kenya. May we honour it through a shared pan-African commitment to principled leadership, human rights and public service rooted in respect for every person’s dignity.

Investigative journalism sucks. Most times we just get killed and life moves on. This one is a rare case where the public stands up to fight and demonstrate. Most times it’s a gathering of 15 and a pie for attendees 🚮
Malta’s most famous investigative journalist was killed by a car bomb in 2017.
Nine years later, no one has been convicted for ordering the killing of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Now, a new development in the case has sparked protests in the country.

HRF condemns the abduction and subsequent imprisonment of award-winning Ugandan human rights activist and HRF #FreedomFellow Praise Aloikin over a social media video. In the video, she sharply criticized Uganda’s military chief and erratic son of the dictator Yoweri Museveni. HRF believes Aloikin said out loud what other Ugandans are too afraid to say and joins calls to #FreePraiseAloikin and for charges against her to be dropped.

Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu is finally free!
After more than three years of persecution and deprivation of liberty in Azerbaijan, Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu is free and safely in Germany, where he is receiving medical care. His case had drawn sustained international concern, including over his health and restrictions preventing him from seeking treatment abroad.
For the WLC family, this moment is especially meaningful. His daughter, Zhala Bayramova, a former WLC Leadership Council member, never stopped fighting for her father’s freedom. Zhala also took part in #FreeThem, an initiative of WLC’s Political Prisoners Support Team, helping amplify the voices and stories of political prisoners and their families.
Today, we celebrate with Zhala and her family—and with everyone who stood beside them throughout this long fight.
This is why we keep speaking out. This is why we keep fighting for every political prisoner. Until they are all free.

We are alarmed that Aloikin Praise Opoloje, a young Ugandan woman human rights defender who has spoken out against repression and the torture of activists, has been abducted and that her whereabouts remain unknown. Her disappearance raises grave concerns about the safety of women who exercise their freedom of expression and dare to speak truth to power.
The silencing of women who challenge power is not incidental to repression; it is part of how repression works. Women human rights defenders must be free to speak, dissent, organise and resist without fear of disappearance or reprisal.
@AloikinOpoloje must be released immediately. Her safety must be guaranteed.

With our Executive Director @Hassan_shire back in the office, our management team convened its weekly meetings to strategise on the last quarter of the year.
Today’s meeting focused on planning for the final quarter and aligning both existing and emerging priorities across our program areas of Protection, Digital Security and Advocacy.
As we launch the final quarter of the year, we are turning the reflections from our mid-year staff retreat into action points. During the retreat we dedicated time to assess the year reviewing the progress made, analysing what is working well, discussing challenges encountered, and aligning our priorities for the months ahead.
We remain focused on strengthening our collective efforts to protect and promote the rights of human rights defenders across Africa.

Thank you @HEBobiwine and @BarbieItungoK for standing in solidarity with @kizzabesigye1 and for your generous contribution to the support fund.
@kizzabesigye1 and I stand with you too, as you and your family endure exile simply because you dared to challenge @KagutaMuseveni for the presidency.
No Ugandan family should be uprooted, driven into exile, abducted, humiliated, imprisoned, or persecuted for exercising their democratic rights. No, nedda!
This is a time for all Ugandans who believe in freedom and democracy to stand together and resist repression and injustice peacefully, courageously and in unity.
Our country belongs to all of us. 🇺🇬
Dr. Kizza Besigye - an icon of our struggle, a pillar of resilience, and a true elder of the Ugandan liberation movement.
For decades, Dr. Besigye has consistently chosen conviction over comfort. He has remained steadfast and completely unyielding in the face of brutal persecution, multiple unlawful detentions, and constant threats to his life.
The Museveni regime continues to harass and torment him in the hope that they will break his spirit. Yet, through it all, he continues to stand firm - his spirit unbroken.
While we can never repay him for his enduring leadership and refusal to bow to tyranny, we can stand with him in his hour of need. I am grateful to our friends who have launched this solidarity campaign to raise funds for his welfare and mounting legal costs while he and his colleagues continue to languish in jail.
I encourage all of us to be part of this effort. Let us contribute whatever we can to support this cause. My wife @BarbieItungoK and I are making a modest contribution of UGX 5,000,000.
By standing together during these challenging times, we send a clear message to the regime: they can jail our bodies, but they can never jail our solidarity. Their attempts to throw us into disarray will not yield. Together, we shall overcome.

Meet Jonathan Duarte — a Nicaraguan-American pro-democracy activist, political strategist, and advocate committed to the fight for freedom and democratic governance in Nicaragua. As Executive Director of the Nicaraguan Freedom Foundation, he works to expose human rights abuses, defend political prisoners, and amplify the voices of those silenced by repression.
A former @HRF Freedom Fellow and experienced electoral strategist, Jonathan works to strengthen international coalitions and support democracy movements on the frontlines. He served as an elected member of the WLC Leadership Council from 2023 to 2025 and continues his work within the WLC as Regional Secretary for the Americas, connecting activists across borders and advancing a shared struggle for freedom and democratic change.
100%. Many valiant people have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their unflinching demand for freedom, democracy and justice.
The #ThulaniMasekoFoundation came into existence as a legacy project precisely because Adv Thulani Maseko stood for democracy/justice and was killed for it
Today, thousands of human rights defenders face threats, arbitrary detention, violence, and reprisals for doing exactly that. Protecting them is not optional. States have an obligation to ensure that they can do their work safely and without fear. And we also have a responsibility: to stand with them 🤝 and make sure those spaces remain open.🛡️
On this #InternationalDayofDemocracy, I want to pay tribute to those who continue to defend our rights and freedoms, often paying a very high price for doing so.🌍
Without human rights defenders, democracy itself is at risk.⚠️
