It is horrifying to watch Paris, the most handsome city in Europe being destroyed. I have always admired how the French protest and stand up for themselves but this is gut wrenching. Those beautiful building and markets belong aesthetically to every French person. You don't need the deeds to The Louvre or Westminster Abbey to know those building enrich your life.

📣IMPORTANT📣
PLEASE OBJECT: LBC/2026/27 Penrhos Coastal Park.
Friends, we need your voice again! 💚
A new Listed Building Consent application — LBC/2026/27 — has been submitted for works to historic structures across Penrhos Coastal Park. While it sounds like just repairs, we believe this application should NOT be considered or approved on its own.
❌ Why we're asking you to object:
🔹 They are deeply connected,
The works proposed here directly affect the same land and buildings covered by the major Reserved Matters application RM/2026/2. You cannot properly judge one without knowing exactly what the other permits.
🔹 Separate decisions = piecemeal planning. If this is passed now in isolation, vital decisions about our historic buildings will be made before we know the full picture of what the larger development will actually look like, where access will go, and what land will be disturbed. This is exactly how important things get missed.
🔹 Our heritage deserves full consideration, These aren't just buildings; they're Bailiffs Tower, Penrhos House remains, the Water Tower, Betting Stand and more. They stand together as part of our story. Their future should be decided together, not in separate pieces.
🔹 Cumulative impact must be assessed, The true effect on these precious historic buildings can only be properly understood when we see the whole picture, the full development plan alongside these proposed works.
✅ What to do:
Please send your comment/
objection to:
📧 [email protected]
Reference: LBC/2026/27 — Interconnected with RM/2026/2
Even a short message makes a difference! I've written my full objection letter below! feel free to use it, adapt it to your own, or even write your own. Every single voice counts. Thank you for standing with us to protect Penrhos 💚🌳

Marston's threat shows the damage cost is doing to hospitality.
The threatened closure of Marston's Brewery in Burton upon Trent should be ringing alarm bells in Westminster. I lead Staffordshire County Council and I've worked in hospitality since the early 80s, and I've never seen our sector in a worse state. Since COVID, it has been battered, and the biggest reason is cost.
Burton upon Trent, here in Staffordshire, is Britain's capital of brewing. If brewing is in trouble here, it's in trouble everywhere.
My heart goes out to every worker at Marston's and their families. For some, this brewery has been a way of life for generations, passed down from grandparents to parents to children. They are worried sick right now, and they deserve every effort we can make to keep it open.
Carlsberg Britvic points to falling cask ale sales. Sales of all alcohol are down. But that's only part of the picture. There has been a huge drop in people going out and socialising, and a large number of pubs, bars and clubs have closed their doors. 161 pubs shut in the first three months of this year alone, nearly two a day. A third of our nightclubs have gone since 2020.
This is far more than a change in society. One of the biggest reasons is cost.
I owned and ran what I believe is the UK's longest-running nightclub under the same owner. Trust me, at today's costs, much of our sector is simply not economically viable.
Our hospitality sector is one of the most heavily taxed in Europe. Take VAT. We charge 20%. France, Spain and Italy charge 10%. Germany has cut VAT on restaurant food to 7%. The European average is 12.8%.
Then there's beer and alcohol duty, again among the highest in Europe. Our brewers pay twelve times more duty than brewers in Germany or Spain. After all that, a pub makes around 12p on a pint.
Add the red tape and the never-ending legislation, and you can see why so many good operators are handing back the keys.
I've written to the Minister to discuss how we save this brewery, and I've asked Carlsberg Britvic for a meeting to find out where the pressures are, and how we can help.
VAT is the problem. But so is beer duty, and most certainly business rates and energy costs. Together they are killing off the Great British pub.
This matters far beyond the balance sheet. Humans are social creatures. We need to get out, see each other, talk and laugh together. When that stops happening, people suffer. You can see it in the rise in mental health problems, especially among our younger generation.
A pint of beer is as British as a cup of tea. The Great British pub is as English as the village green. And brewing in Burton is as historic as it gets. Monks at Burton Abbey were brewing beer here more than a thousand years ago.
We must save our traditions and our heritage sites. Marston's has brewed in Burton since 1834, its Shobnall Road brewery has been making beer since 1875, and it still brews Bass, a name that goes back to 1777.
This brewery should definitely be treated as a heritage site. Not as some museum piece, but as a viable business with a future.

The 2 & 1/2 year failure of Birmingham civic leaders to step in and CPO what was the UK’s oldest working cinema AND the birthplace of Black Sabbath is, frankly, embarrassing.
A city is defined by its stories. Birmingham’s leaders are letting ‘developers’ erase our story.

📢 THE FULL TRUTH ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING TO PENRHOS 📢
The original outline planning split development across three sites, Penrhos, Cae Glas, and Kingsland. Cae Glas and Kingsland have now fallen away, EVERYTHING is being built ON Penrhos Nature Reserve itself.
Here is what is now proposed:
✅ 500 lodges
✅ Bars, restaurants, cafés & shops
✅ A tropical swimming pool
⚠️ Parking INCREASED from 600 to 1,015 cars — nearly DOUBLE the original number! That's the size of a massive supermarket car park
💔 MOST DEVASTATING: They have rescinded the 75 acres originally promised for public amenity. That land is NO longer for us.
📉 The £20 MILLION Section 106 mitigation for local services has FALLEN AWAY too. This was legally promised to the community, and now it's gone. That in itself raises serious legal questions! a Section 106 cannot simply be discarded; it requires a formal Deed of Variation approved by the Council. Has that even been applied for?…….NO!
🔄 In exchange for our beautiful Penrhos Nature Reserve, we are being offered a "replacement" on Cae Glas! the old capped landfill site:
⚠️ Only raised boardwalks, you will NEVER walk on the actual land
⚠️ NO DOGS allowed, not even on leads!
⚠️ Restricted access over ground with known leachate concerns raises huge red flags!
This is NOT a fair swap. This is NOT what we were promised. The whole scheme has changed so fundamentally, it should be treated as an entirely NEW application, not just "Reserved Matters."
Please keep sending your objections to RM/2026/2. We cannot let this go unchallenged. 💚

Let me introduce you to a brave hero from my country, Iran.
She was 16 years old. Just a girl. And on the streets of Iran, she did something braver than most people do in a lifetime: she took off her hijab and burned it in public. Right in front of the regime. Right in front of the world.
That was her crime: civil disobedience. A teenage girl refusing to obey men who claimed authority over her hair, her body, her life.
Her message spoke for millions of Iranian women:
To every man who rules over women in the name of religion, honor, or culture: We do not obey you. Your laws were never made for us.
This is what real power looks like: unarmed, unafraid, unbowed.
For that defiance, she was arrested. Her family says she was tortured and killed after falling into the hands of security forces. The Iranian authorities denied responsibility and gave a different account of her death.
Her name was Nika Shakarami. She was 16.
Now ask yourself: How many women in the West know her name? How many know what she risked for a freedom they have never had to fight for?
Say her name: Nika Shakarami.
