ALT Guttmacher Institute CEO Herminia Palacio; VP of Finance and Administration Maureen Burnley; Executive Vice President Jonathan Wittenberg: On July 12th, we watched the Guttmacher Employees United win their union in an election 61-2, verifying by ballot that the Guttmacher Institute staff overwhelmingly wanted a union after the employer did not grant them voluntary recognition. Less than an hour later, Guttmacher fired Sam Heyne on the spot, a lead union organizing committee member. On that same day, Guttmacher Institute shared a message to the public that management “look[s] forward to working with the union and staff in a productive and collaborative manner.” However, the unfair termination of Sam Heyne clearly displays the opposite intent from the employer. We see the firing of Sam Heyne for what it is: employer retaliation against staff for exercising their right to organize a union.

ALT Less than 2 weeks prior to the union vote count, on July 1st, another union-eligible member of the Finance & Administration team, Reynaldine Bourdeau, was abruptly let go. These actions are not only unacceptable but unlawful. As such we demand the reinstatement of Sam Heyne and Reynaldine Bourdeau into their roles at Guttmacher Institute. Guttmacher management must truly commit itself to “working with the union and staff in a productive and collaborative manner.” The first step in achieving this is to correct their mistake in firing Sam and Reynaldine.
