As hybrid positions, they could live anywhere in Colorado. Currently we meet in Denver no more than one day a month.

It's one thing to think, "In terms of three-point-one-fours," but very abstract to think, "in terms of ratios of the circle's circumference to its diameter."

One of my favorite articles in #mathed theorizes why this is hard: mathematical conceptions include processes and objects, and it's hard to make the leap to thinking of a process (like we are introduced to functions) as the object in another process. link.springer.com/article/10…

I've had a rather negative, albeit uninformed, reaction to Substack. When blogs are generally independent and free and RSS is independent and free, I struggle to be convinced that I need to participate in another company's money-making scheme.

Meet Marley Horn, whose love of coaching soccer was her first foray into working with children. However it was her work in a bilingual elementary classroom that sealed her fate and love for teaching. Meet our 2023 Outstanding Grad in Elementary Education: colorado.edu/education/2023/…

The thing I generally *want* to say (but don't) is, "Do you have any idea how not-good you are at lots of things? And how okay that is? Math has a way of making you feel like you're not good at it when, in fact, you're fine. Maybe even better than fine. Just like lots of things."

From Chat GPT: "When teaching a four-year-old to read, it is important to understand the child's learning style and tailor the instruction accordingly...Every child has a unique learning style, which may include visual, auditory, or kinesthetic (hands-on) learning." Cool, cool.

Bill Gates says A.I. chatbots will teach kids to read within 18 months: "You’ll be ‘stunned by how it helps.’
"The AI’s will get to that ability, to be as good a tutor as any human ever could."
It’s a new beginning of the education system.

None are currently recording, and some aren't plugged in or turned on, but we are totally surrounded by lenses and sensors at this point.

Ever stop to really think about how many cameras there are everywhere? It could be an interesting mathematical investigation for students. I'm in my home office and I count about a dozen if I include front and rear for a tablet and 2 phones, webcams, and what's in my camera bag.

I wonder if we've over-focused on class size, and how much that could be a factor in this. At least in secondary, the quick way to smaller class sizes is to teach more class periods and give up potential planning time.

I know we'd all like it if teaching fit into 8 practices instead of 19, but this is one of those that the @TeachingWorks folks got right and make it worth having a longer list. teachingworks.org/high-lever…
