Five series of Clarkson's Farm, and the same thing happened every year without anyone pointing it out.
The wheat drowned in the wettest autumn on record. The sheep stood in the rain and lambed.
The oilseed rape was eaten by flea beetle before it came up. The cows ate the grass that grew where the rape had failed.
The potatoes rotted in a shed he could not sell them from. The pigs ate the potatoes.
The wasabi, the chillies, the mushrooms in the bunker and the nettle soup made a few hundred pounds between them. The venison off the wood paid for the stalker and then some.
The barley came in late, light and under the price it cost to grow, and the brewery took it at a discount. The beef off the same acres went out of the farm shop at a price people queued down the lane for.
The arable half needed a two hundred thousand pound tractor, a man to drive it, a contractor to combine it, diesel, sprays, seed and a prayer to the sky. The grass half needed a fence and an animal.
The one thing on that farm that failed every single year was the part a government leaflet tells you Britain should be growing more of.
The one thing that never once failed was the part you are told the planet cannot afford.
Five years of evidence, a thousand acres, the best advice in the county, and a camera crew to record it. The verdict was the same as every hill farmer's since the Domesday Book. On land like that, the animal is the only thing that works.

We are ready to discuss financial asks that are fair, proportionate and achievable.
After more than six years, the 3.8 million cannot simply be written off. Businesses, homes, livelihoods and futures were lost.
More than 40 members of our community saw no other way out than to take their own lives.
Recognition is fair. Accountability is proportionate.
Justice is doable.
Prime Minister, let us begin that work.

Chloe woke at 6:30am, 5 years vegan to the day, and checked her conscience. Spotless, as usual.
Animals harmed by Chloe so far today, by Chloe's count: 0.
6:40am - Took her supplements. B12, iron, zinc, iodine, algae oil and vegan D3. 6 tablets, brewed in vats in China, to replace what she is too ethical to get from an egg. Chloe calls this eating the way nature intended.
6:55am - Fed Basil, her rescue cat, his vegan kibble. Basil is an obligate carnivore with opinions. He tops up privately with goldfinches. Chloe's count: 0.
7:15am - Almond milk latte. Chloe does not eat honey, because honey exploits bees. Her almonds were pollinated by 2 million hives trucked across America to California, an annual event the beekeepers compare to sending bees to war. Billions do not come back. The milk is 2% almond. Chloe's count: 0.
8:00am - Pulled on her vegan leather boots. Vegan leather is plastic. They will last 2 winters and then spend 500 years in landfill, outliving everyone who ever complimented them. Her grandmother's leather pair did 30 years and then became soil.
10:30am - Bought an oat flat white with a £10 note. The note contains tallow. The Bank of England looked into changing that and decided against. The oat milk contains rapeseed oil, and its maker took $200 million from Blackstone. Chloe tipped.
12:30pm - Lunch: organic kale bowl with coconut dressing. The kale was raised on blood, fish and bone meal, which is what organic farms use instead of chemicals. The coconuts were picked in Thailand by monkeys on chains. The bowl has a higher body count than a cheese sandwich. Chloe's count: 0.
3:00pm - Needed a lie down. Has needed one daily since 2022. Put it down to toxins leaving the body. Ordered a 7th supplement.
6:30pm - Dinner: a plant-based burger. 18 ingredients, among them methylcellulose, which also serves the nation as a laxative and as wallpaper paste. The peas in the patty were defended all summer by men with shotguns, because pigeons also enjoy peas. The wheat in the bun sat in a silo ringed with rat poison. Chloe's count: 0.
8:00pm - Booked 2 weeks at a yoga retreat in Bali. The return flight puts out roughly what 5 years of veganism saved. Chloe is now carbon level with a man who eats brisket daily and holidays in Rhyl.
9:00pm - Posted: "5 years without harming a single living being." 412 likes.
9:15pm - Basil came in through the cat flap with a vole, and the only honest expression in the house.
Final count for the day. Chloe: 0. Basil: 2, and he ate what he killed.

ANDY IS FOR US. NOW, AS PRIME MINISTER, HE CAN DELIVER JUSTICE.
Andy Burnham has been the loudest and most consistent political champion of ExcludedUK since the beginning of our campaign.
In his own words, which you can watch in the video below:
“The support for you is strong and it will always be there, the reason being because the level of injustice that you have faced is indefensible.”
He listened when others would not. He gave our members a platform. He publicly recognised the devastating injustice inflicted on 3.8 million UK taxpayers who dutifully paid into the system, but were deliberately left without parity of Covid-19 financial support when they needed it most.
During his first speech as Labour leader, Andy spoke about putting political power at the service of people and places that had been waiting too long to hope again. He promised to bring back the hope.
He also spoke about the Hillsborough Law and the importance of ensuring that people who have suffered institutional injustice are finally given truth, accountability and justice.
The ExcludedUK community is one of those communities.
More than six years later, thousands remain trapped by debt, lost businesses, lost homes, damaged health and severe mental distress. More than 40 people connected with our campaign saw no other way out than to take their own lives.
Towards the end of his leadership speech, Andy also spoke about supporting British business and rebuilding the economy.
That promise must include the company directors, freelancers, sole traders, newly self-employed people and small business owners who were legally prevented from trading, denied fair and equal support and forced to carry the financial consequences personally.
These businesses did not fail because they were unviable.
They were failed by government policy.
Andy has taken part in ExcludedUK livestream events, listened directly to our members and repeatedly highlighted the need to secure justice for the excluded.
During our livestream on 24 June 2024, he told us:
“The public see you and the public support you.”
He also promised:
“We will work with you to make sure that the excluded is recognised as one of the injustices that this country needs to rectify.”
Andy made his commitment unmistakably clear:
“I supported you back in the pandemic, and we support you now. The passage of time doesn’t change that.”
And he recognised the strength of our case:
“The support for you is strong and it will always be there, the reason being because the level of injustice that you have faced is indefensible.”
Today, Andy Burnham is no longer simply one of our strongest supporters.
He is our Prime Minister.
He now has the power to turn those commitments into meaningful action.
For the 3.8 million, bringing back hope must mean recognition, accountability, parity and justice.
Prime Minister, you have always stood with us.
Now is the time to come through on your promise.
Bring back the hope. Deliver justice for the excluded.

Congratulations, Prime Minister Burnham.
From the very first days of the #ExcludedUK campaign, Andy Burnham has been our loudest and most consistent political champion.
He understood the injustice faced by the 3.8 million UK taxpayers who were excluded from government Covid-19 financial support, and he used his voice to call for the parity they were denied.
Now, as Prime Minister, he has the opportunity to turn that unwavering support into action.
More than 40 #ExcludedUK members lost their lives to suicide, while thousands of others continue to live with debt, trauma, ill health, lost homes and businesses that never recovered.
Prime Minister, you have stood with us from day one. Now please follow through on your promise and deliver parity for the excluded.
We know you understand. We now trust you to act.
Dutifully paid in. Deliberately left out.

They have oodles of talent, passion and drive.

EXCELLENT ARTICLE BY THE BBC ABOUT THE CONTINUED PLIGHT OF THE EXCLUDED, EVEN AFTER IT BEING 5 YEARS SINCE THE START OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
A huge thank you to the @BBCNews team who covered the stories of #ExcludedUK members, Tim Pravda (@ExcludedFighter) and Chris Andrews, who told their story of their Covid-19 experience and how it still impacts on them 5 years after the start of the pandemic.
Please share far and wide to keep our story out there.
