ALT “I welcome the publication today of Philip Rycroft’s review into foreign interference in UK politics. With public trust in politics worryingly low, we cannot allow the perception of foreign money distorting our politics to continue. The review published today is an important step in getting ahead of the problem before dirty money damages our democracy.” Matt Western MP, Chair Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy

ALT The possibility of a major successful foreign financial influence effort targeting UK elections can no longer be ruled out. The perception of foreign money shaping politics is increasingly corrosive. Public trust is already low; it would not take too much to fracture. The Government must make several amendments to its Representation of the People Bill if concerns are to be adequately addressed.

ALT “These challenges to political finance could prove to be a perennial whack-a-mole; protections need to be made as tight as possible now if we are to get ahead of the problem. Action now would help to safeguard our politics from dirty money. Failure to act could see the UK in real trouble.” Matt Western MP, Chair

ALT To keep UK politics safe from foreign money, we are calling for: 1. A ban on cryptocurrency political donations until safeguards are in place 2. A new national police unit to oversee political finance 3. Tougher prison sentences for facilitating foreign financial influence 4. Tighter control on donations from companies and overseas individuals
