As to what "sprockets" are missing from GPT3's clockwork: I like the Embodied Cognitive Linguistics (ECL) program articulated by @rtk254 and coauthors in this paper from ACL 2020.

Not super concrete (yet :) ), but it was a significant inspiration for our ACL2020 position paper proposing a new kind of language model in which the focus is on the *mental* model induced by the language, rather than just the linguistic signal.
