ONE WEEK TODAY AT THE GLOUCESTER HISTORY FESTIVAL, WE ASK:
WHO WAS THE BLAME FOR THE WARS OF THE ROSES? ⚔️👑🩸
Tickets now on sale for a bumper day at this most prestigious of history festivals. It's going to be WAR 💥⚔️
Loved my chat this week with Ian Gardiner - did you know, apparently, the tower on an aircraft carrier is due to the radial engines torque pull in early aircraft? Thus the tower is always on the Starboard side (with a couple of exceptions), so if the aircraft turns, it doesn’t go into the tower - who knew?
This week, Ian Gardiner was back on the pod after featuring last year with ‘The Yompers’ and his experience of the Falklands War
This week, he’s talking ‘The Flatpack Bombers’ and introducing us to why they were so important and were the first strategic bombing raids conducted, as well as to why it was the Royal Naval Air Service who led this endeavour
So interesting and @AvroHeriMuseum and @frankpleszak will be interested in the role of the Avro 504

Nice little early purchase at the village fete from the excellent @SarahLouMiller - we must arrange a chat on the pod
Will get this read and done by tomorrow night as always loved the Avro Lancaster, and with the family connection to Lancasters it makes it even more memorising…
Great to have spoken about Lancs and Avro with @frankpleszak from @AvroHeriMuseum in the past also
Do help out and follow @MikeHistorian who is rebuilding his X profile and share with all you can to build followers back up have for this quality historian
He’s been on the syndicate several times to talk about airborne operations and been most excellent!
We’ve most enjoyed Op GRANITE and Op HUSKY and FUSTIAN, always popular talks and of course he does his Battlefield Guiding as well
Absolute legend who we’ll have back on the syndicate whenever he wishes

Spending the afternoon tuning up my presentation on Operation Pointblank for the Road Scholars WWII conference in Oxford this Friday. It's always great fun speaking to such a well-informed audience.
Hi all - No episode this week while finishing off the summer. Will be back next week with more exciting history and discussion.

Sunrise: Imperial War Museum, London, September 1, 2026.
Today, soldiers from L (Néry) Battery, 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, gathered to honour the heroes who came before them at the Affair of Néry.
Standing in front of the famous Néry Gun - the 13-pounder that became a symbol of extraordinary courage on this day in 1914 - they remembered the men whose actions then earned three Victoria Crosses before breakfast.
Against overwhelming odds, the soldiers of L Battery fought on and on.
Their courage, resilience and determination became part of the Battery’s history and its identity.
More than a century later, today’s soldiers strive to live up to that remarkable legacy - setting the bar with the same resilience, professionalism and respect.
We remember their sacrifice. We honour their courage. And we carry their story forward.

Last week we said goodbye to my great friend @Toby_McLeod who we have sadly and suddenly lost in the syndicate
It was an absolutely honour to have been his mate and learn from him via our mutual love of military history, wargaming and battlefield studies
Veterans of many competitions and tours together, endless military movie quotes and happy memories - a favourite will always be a trip to Ramillies and of course many Normandy Trips
He supported me through many things and of course came onto the pod to chat Culloden (as he is seen below on Cumberland’s Stone) and the Jacobite Rising earlier this year as the last thing we did together
I learned so much and will always try to emulate how he could hold an audience with his telling of history
Until the next RV…will be sorely missed
Lest we forget

What if Caen wasn’t supposed to be a quick breakthrough at all? 🤯 Historian @BattlefieldBen explains how Montgomery deliberately turned the area into an anvil — pinning German armour into a brutal battle of attrition while the wider Allied breakout developed elsewhere. A completely different perspective on Normandy. 🎙️⚔️

‘Embattled belief’ - I found Prof Snape’s point o. Perhaps the National Service of the 1950s may have contributed to the decline in people attending Christian worship in the 1960s most interesting - that as young men they were forced to Church Parades and this may have contributed to an aversion to going to Church in later adult life

Fantastic work from Cotswold again... – at Aurland, Norge
At the end of the first week back at our @dodpaa recovery effort for 2nd Lt Lester Lowry, the initial excavation is yielding heartening results.
We've been stripping back and carefully sieving soils from directly above what we believe to be the deepest section of Lowry's crash crater. Although the crash site was investigated in the late 1970s by a local group, we are still finding identifiable aircraft fragments, including a Browning machine gun mount, an engine valve, and a large piece of wing spar. The sieving team are retrieving twisted steel and aluminium components that speak to the force of the impact, as they meticulously screen for direct evidence of Lt Lowry.
If you are free and willing to support the recovery – in particular the soil sieving that is central to its success – please do head here to create an account and sign-up: cotswoldarchaeology.rosterfy… 🇺🇸🕊️
